Lightning to Toslink Adapter Question

Yes, in your case there is a D/A chip in the adapter, and possibly an op-amp as well.

Surely you could connect headphones to this adapter (requires stereo mini-jack plug) - that's the whole purpose of the adapter.

That looks like what I bought. In my case only DC power exits the Lightning port of the iPhone/iPad. Music exits via Bluetooth, travels through the air, enters the wire, then flows out the headphone jack into my non-Bluetooth headphones. I am certain of this. I have talked to Tech Support.

Sounds like nonsense to me. That's not the way an Apple lightning-headphone adapter (model MMX62FE/A) should work.

I wonder if you were talking at cross-purposes.
One way to know for sure - open Control Center on your iPhone and disable bluetooth (the bluetooth icon will dim). I'm fairly confident your lightning-headphone adapter will continue to work.

No. If I turn Bluetooth off it does not work. If I turn Bluetooth on the device “pairs” with the adapter! I had as much trouble believing this as you, but it is true.
 
I’m starting to think mine is gray market. It says Apple and the box was high quality. But the first time I called Apple the advice was identical to yours. The seller, on eBay, told me to turn on Bluetooth, after that Apple agreed, “pair with Bluetooth”. As always with Apple written instructions were nil.
 
All these little lightning to headphone adapters are fine for headpones...when they work. But to use as a toslink connection, they don't.
