Live Music Venues

Maryland: Baltimore and Annapolis area...

Rams Head -- Annapolis, Md. Terrible acoustics but they do pull some pretty good acts in there.

Baldwin Station -- Sykesville Md. Very small venue in an old B&O Railroad station in Sykesville, Md. (~20 miles West of Baltimore)

There's a truly amazing little place in Maine, none too far from Conway, NH, called the Stone Mountain Arts Center http://www.stonemountainartscenter.com/

It's a tiny but comfortable venue and it attracts an amazing array of artists. Richard Thompson, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, and the Wailin Jennys, e.g., have been there since my first trip there last summer. Imagine seeing those folks after a nice dinner in a 200 seat room.

They are my current very favorite-est artists, full stop. We see 'em whenever they're within a few hours of Bahsten. SMAC was the best venue and in some respects the best show (they were very relaxed; Heather Masse grew up one town over from SMAC and her family was there).

Besides being stunningly talented, they have great-sounding (reference-quality) recordings.

(not a high quality recording, but it'll give you an idea)

Henry J. Kaiser (Oakland) is pretty good for a large space. Greek Theater (Berkeley) is good for outdoor. Zellerbach Hall on the UCB campus is really good. Yoshi's Berkeley/Oakland is really good. The Great American Music Hall (SF) is capable of sounding good.

Unfortunately, I cannot edit the first message of this thread to add the newer suggestions. Anyone have a suggestion how we can make a master list ?

To the OP, how fortunate to get to see so many venues and acts.

My favorites:

NE Ohio:
E.J. Thomas at Akron U. - no matter the performance, it's acoustically fantastic. Chris Isaak was brilliant there.
Akron Civic Theatre - intimate, saw Seger there mid '70s
Blossom Music Center - outdoor music at it's finest year after year
Palace Theatre, Cleveland- another nice theatre venue
JB's Kent - college town acts nightclub that has survived the test of time

From my 2 years in florida we saw a few nice performances:

Tampa Theatre - awesome show with Tori Amos
Many beach shows at various venues, favorite was Toad the Wet Sprocket.

Only Seen one so far
Metallica in 09'
Hoping Alice Cooper makes his way to MN. Although I may make a drive if need be
