Local pick up and paying for an ebay item - Buyer's protection or not?

The terms for payment would have been specified in the eBay listing. The seller cannot unilaterally change the terms of the sale.

If this is a change of terms of payment report it to eBay and have the sale cancelled.

That being said, I bought an expensive amplifier on Audiogon and payed immediately by PayPal. The following weekend I drove to the sellers home and picked it up. The payment in advance and pick later is not, in and of itself a problem or should not be.

I don't understand the "no cash" thing either, but I always worry about eBay sale with local pick up. I have read about a guy where he sold a pair of speakers, the buyer paid using PayPal, came and picked up the speakers. Days later, the buyer claim "item not received" and asked for a refund.

When I sold a portable Sony shortwave radio, the buyer wanted to do local pick up. I printed out the listing and had him sign and date on the print out.

I guess you can ask the buyer to submit a feedback indicating item has been picked up?

Local pick-up when paying with paypal is fine for the buyer as you can still claim SNAD etc., but the seller should provide a receipt/acceptance, buyer and seller should sign and date both, seller keeps one buyer keeps one, I would take a photo of seller with receipt and goods, then I also take a photo of the buyer's car/license plate (or you could take a photo of ID). This would be for anything of substantial value (which of course is a variable depending on the budgets of the people involved).

For a buyer to come and pay cash, pick up the goods (which is the only way I will sell any of my collection typically) the buyer has the goods and the seller has the cash, there really isn't much if any recourse in either direction but in this case the buyer is satisfied with the purchase/goods before leaving and paying, so all should be happy. Ebay does not let you specify this however, you must have an "electronic form of payment" on the item/ad/auction, which puts the seller at risk of SNAD or denial that it was received and a refund.

Ebay sales have risks, as does shipping, cash on pick-up is really the only "final" sale (even that has "right of recission" for varying times in most states however, ... technically).
