I can fix it but good...

I think I need an intervention.
I went to the MIT flea market today to sell some goodies (mostly electronics test stuff and some speakers) and found these on my way out. Both pretty nice but I do need a source for that missing handle or a good substitute. The OE wooden case would be beyond cool.
Thoughts?

Nice deal you got!!!!
Does the Kr-9600 play and everything?
How much did you pay for the both of them?
Thanks

The kenwood will kick the yamaha's ass, if they are both perfectly functional. This isn't a disparaging statement about the Yamaha. It's just the 9600 is, in my opinion, from the best sounding line of Kenwood receivers from that decade. It should impress in a big way.

Oh crap, another mistress. The Kenwood is really terrific! The seller had the Kenwood priced at $125 which I thought was a good score as it was but I traded him 3 pieces that cost me a quarter of that so it was a great deal x two. The Kenwood plays great. I had to replace 3 bulbs and clean the controls / switches (which weren't all that bad anyway). I think I should replace the line cord with a pilfered computer piece though.
The Yamaha cost $50 which is a good price. I just have a thing for the first generation of receivers with digital displays (I also have a Harman Kardon 690i which I really like). I'm probably not going to pay much attention to the Yamaha for a while though.
The one rack handle on there has some pitting and since it'll be unlikely I'll be able to score a pair for reasonable dough I'm thinking of going with a pair of heavy duty handles from Hammond (1427TBB). They're black and about $15 a pair. Plus it would give me an excuse to order dome power transistors for another project I've been ignoring (from Newark Electronics).

I got the KR-9600 all cleaned up and "online" tonight. I soaked the front panel and knobs, had to glue one of the toggles slighty and replaced the handle(s). It was missing one of the chrome handles so I got a pair of these black ones from Newark Electronics for short money. I wouldn't want to lift the rig by them but I think they look good. I also replaced some of the lights with LEDs and am going to do the rest in a few weeks once they arrive from China (and probably upgrade the power resistors).
The case was repainted in black "hammertone" paint and of course I gave it a good cleaning.
This is my first Kenwood of any substance; everything seems to work perfectly and I like it plenty!

Nice gear. I realy like the black dial face.
I think that black handles compliment the dial face nicely. I also bought a pair of silver handles but they looked 'blah'.
I also replaced the power cord with one of the many computer cables that were breeding in my junque box and made up a pair of 6" RCA cables to replace the pre-amp/main-amp jumpers.

I had a KR9600 a few years back, a really nice reciever. It's really loud too.
Enjoy!

My spouse concurs (sadly).
My understanding is that the final drivers are unobtainable so I'm not going to overcook it. And also not block the cooling vents.

I performed my final tweak on my KR-9600; I replaced all of the status indicator bulbs with different colored LEDs. I experimented with LEDs for the main tuning dial and the meters but I decided I liked the incandescent bulbs in there better.
This kitten's done. I've gone through all kinds of equipment and this one's a keeper. Oh, and the picture is a compilation of several pix. I pasted in the illuminated status lights all into one image. Crafty eh? I could've been a freakin' double naught spy!

Hey, w1Jim, where did you get replacement bulbs for your Kenwood? I picked up a kr-6600 recently that works great except both meter bulbs as well as the tuning meter don't work. I've just gotta see my meters light up!:D

I was lucky, all of my bulbs (except the stereo bulb worked). Contact the apparent AK lamp meister Djwojo about some bulbs.

And yes, it is a beast! But now I'm fixing up an SX-1250, another beast to reside side by side with the Kenwood!

Now, when you get a chance to play with the Yamaha, try it with a turntable. You will notice that on records that were not mastered that well, engaging the Spatial Expander will help fill out the sound stage and add depth to the room. It really works and I think it's one of the coolest knobs anyone came up with :)

OBTW - I can't tell from the photo, which model Yamie R is it?

I gave my daughter an R100 for her birthday back in the summer and you're right, the Spatial Expander can really increase the sense of the size of the room. How do they do that?
