Look what followed me home today!

This is a Koronette Stereo console in really nice condition. It is vintage 1968. Origional and complete. You should have seen the look on my wife's face when I came home with this! I gotta find it a new home soon! I just hate seeing beautiful stuff like this go to waste. Anybody know anything about these? It says it is made in East Germany. Came with the owners manual, schematic and stuff. Tubes inside...

Silver Fan,

Nice!

When I scored the 60's console at the dump last Saturday I had no quams about gutting the tube amp/tuner unit out of it and trashing the cabinet. You however may have more trouble by the looks of it making that kind of decision. I guess you could always ebay it. Pickup only.

Anything special in there? Drivers?

Rob

BTW, I did yank the guts and brought the amp in for tests last night. I'll post about my results.

I don't know Rob, I just hate to trash such a beautiful cabinet. I guess I could ebay it. I would just as soon find a friend who might want it and bring it back to life. I have no profit intentions in it really, just wanted to save the piece of history. I will have to take the back off and look inside tomorrow to see what it is about...

That is nice looking.

Did you peak inside? What kinda tubes does it have.

I don't have any furniture but I'd make an exception for something like that.

That is sweet.

Hey Silver,

Are those HP portable audio level test sets in the background? Audio oscillator, precision attenuator unit and 400L (?) dB voltmeter to the right? I still have the attenuator unit from one of those and two empty cases.

Sharp eye there Rob! Yes, those are HP 3550B test sets. I got a few of them as you can see. Need (want) one?

Ken

That is a beauty, Ken. My wife gave me the same look when I rescued a console last fall. Nice unit, but, fortunately, not as nice yours. Took out the amp and pre/tuner and started my tubular (totally) journey.

Played it on Easter amd amazed and delighted the audio nuts in my family. It resides in the garage which is where every body hangs out during summer car sessions. Are you sure you can"t squeeze it in there? There's always room for one more old radio;)

Ken,

While it would be nice to have one of those so I wouldn't have to carry my bench setup to the house for the odd test I'm a little strapped for cash right now.

Wanna laugh? I'm actually using the full vacuum tube version of that volmeter out in the radio observatory right now! 400E I think? I've had it in service on and off for 15 years and haven't ever had the cover off to change a tube. The way I use it in the receiver chain it gets left on 24/365. HP sure knew how to make reliable tube gear!

If I had that much stuff my wife would make sure I could never father another child. Buy your wife a gift and give her a big kiss.

Your right, Silver Fan, too good to trash. It is a nice unit. Neat and clean cabinet. Surely, someone can use it.

I have a couple of consoles, one works real nice, cabinet not so nice. Will strip that one out.

The other one has a separate add on speaker cabinet. It's radio only as I recall. It's been buried for a while, but it will have to go this summer. Spring cleaning !

In the 60's the console was "THE" audio item. Some of those 60's Hi Fi magazines I got recently, show "the latest" in consoles, and add on speakers.

old consoles

Nice looking find.

The trouble with these old consoles is that they're one-peice - can't move the speakers as needed, and they're so big they take up an entire wall, no room for seperate spekers. Also, they typically have mid-fi (or worse) gear inside.

On yours, I would probably canabalize the guts, maybe use the console for something else; would make a COOL bar. Resale market on these is pretty much zero. You just have to love 'em.

There ARE sonically worthy consoles out there.

I did manage to score a couple of years ago - an Acousti-Craft 5' long equipment console and matching 4.5 cu ft seperate cabs. Gorgeous, '63 vintage. Stuffed with HH Scott tube and JBL gear. I sold the gear, kept the furniture.

I've got homebrew tube gear in it now, cabs are L300 clones using Edgar horns. Sounds great.

And the Mrs. LOVES it.

Can you post some pics of that? And hey! Welcome to AK. There are a few of us with tube and high effeciancy speaker setups. Some of us have a bit of everything.

Hello and welcome bean_counter!

Thatch is right, there are those of us here with a bit of everything and your setup sounds just like our kinda partay. Love to see pics and learn more about it. Homebrew electronics? Righteous!

You're lucky, I'm normally less than impressed with bean counters. ;)

Aren't those consoles too short to be a bar? Not that I know what a bar should look like or anything ;) :D

console

Hi,

Thanks fo the welcome.

I know gonefishin' has posted at least one photo of the speakers here, from the '02 Midwest Audiofest.

I'll try to attach some photos...

Here's the console, with a HH Scott 355 tuner/pre and a Thorens TD145 inside.

Here's a photo of one of the speakers. 4.5 cu ft vented (adj vent on the bottom, legs make that possible - nice, no forward or rear venting issues). Have a 15" JBL 2231a inside.

On top, JBL 2420 on a Edgar 650hz tractrix horn. Not in this picture, a Rat Shack add-on bullet crossed with a cap at 15k. Have recently acquired JBL 076 "cat-eyes".

You can just see the 3131a crossover hanging on the back; 800hz. The amp is something I based off of a rusty Dynaco Mk2; PP 6B4G's (6.3V filament version of the 2A3; I use Sovtek's). Choke input supply, fixed bias, 5842 driver, autoformer phase splitter, output iron is from a Sansui 1000A.

bean_counter,

Those are lovely cabinets. They shine so glossy it looks like you must have refinished and clear coated them yourself.

I like what you did to make the amps.
Nice system!
