Found these on FB market place... fisher xp-65k's. Not TOTL, I know, but I like the look of the grills and they're wood veneer, not vinyl... Did some digging and found that the biggest complaint on the sound seems to be rolled-off highs... they sound fine to me with a slight tweak to the treble knob on my receiver...

They do have some marks and scratches in the veneer, and the foams on the woofers are showing their age (got new foams coming already from simply speakers)... should be a fun project to bring these back to life! I'll get some better "before" pics tomorrow so you guys can see the transformation...

Also, I do plan on finishing the Flying Fortress model someday... model building is a hobby that comes and goes for me...

I have a pair of Fisher XP7. I couldn’t turn them down. I love the cabinets but the tweeters are past their prime. Even the designer said replace it. I have a pair of advent tweeters I’m going to try. Supposed to be drop in replacement. And I have a nice pair of 10 inch woofers I would like the try. I suppose you could say I’m experimenting.

I had a pair of those 10+ years ago. Had a thread on here, I believe, about them. They did look good and were built solid but definitely lacking in the top end and uneventful, overall. Replacing the caps didn't really do much for them either. I sold them less than a month later.

Had a pair of these a few months ago. Recap helped, but still needed to max the treble for them to even sound decent on-axis let alone off.... However once I oiled the cabs and put black grill cloth on them they looked super sharp to me. The sunken grill and badge especially.

What I originally thought was a bunch of nasty scratches on one speaker turns out to be white paint... I think removing paint might be easier than fixing scratches, so I think I'm actually happy about it being paint...

Looks like some cleaning and some varnish will make them shine again...

What did you oil them with?

I've used polyurethane on wood projects before, but I don't think I want to go that route with these... I was thinking maybe trying something different like linseed oil... suggestions?
I just use Old English. Seems to work great and it's cheap. I'm sure linseed oil or tung is just fine, poly shouldn't be used unless you like a shiny finish, something I feel doesn't go well with vintage speakers. Rub-on poly to brand new veneer is my exception.

I agree. It just doesn't seem to fit "the look". I want something with "depth", but not something glossy... I'm sure I would be happy with any of the oil finishes, I just have to pick one...

Those old Fisher's are notorious for having very rolled off highs, rumor has it they were specifically voiced that way. I had a pair of XP-7's that were very mellow, even after upgrading the tweets. They sounded good, just not what I was looking for...

Fix 'em and give them a listen. Nothing better than bringing something back to life, even if it's not the beat all, end all at least you did it and got the experience. Just my $0.02...

So, I don't think these had pyle drivers in them originally, did they? I think I'm gonna refoam them anyway and start looking for the originals... (edit) or maybe suitable replacements from parts express...

Thoughts on these? They've gotta be better than the Pyles, right?

Yeah if they don't have the original woofers I would call it a day. Not worth the cash, better places to put that.
If you really have to get these going again, those driver's Q specs don't look right for a sealed enclosure.
