Looking at a Mc system

Hi Folks,

I am not a McIntosh owner but I have looked at Mc equipment over the years.

If I was to fall into a working C22, MC2505 and MR73 for the right price, would I expect these to be a good performers after all these years? If a thorough recondition isn't in the budget, will the performance likely live up to the McIntosh name?

I know this can only be answered based on the law of averages. Anyone want to take a stab?

Well, I have a perfectly re-conditioned McIntosh vintage system. I cant asked for more! Simply musical and perfect eye candy! Worth every cent especially looking at them in their walnut veneered cabinets. :thmbsp:

I have a C22, MC2505, MR71 system. Both the C22 and MC2505 worked, but sounded rough and fuzzy prior to reconditioning. Sent them both to Terry DeWick (ad below) for fix up and audio upgrades. The MR 71 was not working well. That one went to L&M in San Francisco to be repaired and brought up to original specs.

Now they all sound wonderful - can't stop listening - and are reliable.

I would not consider 40-year-old equipment without reconditioning. It may not sound very good or be very reliable. I think the main problem is that old capacitors degrade or fail.

So go for it, if you want a vintage McIntosh system, but allow some budget to get it right.

I have not heard an original C22 but I can tell you the MC2505 is a fantastic amp and holds its own against any amp I have heard.

As others have said, this equipment will likely need some kind of reconditioning.

I've got a 2505 which I sent to Terry shortly after purchasing last year. It is a great amp that sounds fantastic. It also has a ton of power despite the diminutive size (relatively speaking). I have it paired with a C30, but I've often thought it would sound even better with one of the early McIntosh tube pres like a C22 or MX110. That would be the best of both worlds in my opinion. Plenty of clean power from the 2505 and lots of warmth from the C22/MX110.

I have a Mac MX110, MR67 and an MA230 all but the 230 have been restored and all sound fantastic. The 110 is my favorite vintage piece. My 230 still operates very well in original condition but it's time is due for restoration work.

I sent my ma-230 to Terry DeWick and what a difference it made.I thought the repair cost was very reasonable .
