Looking for a DIY amp project that's better sounding than gainclone.

I have LM3875 gainclone that I have built as a DIY project. Now, I am looking for another project that would be a step up in the audio quality. I have considered F5 amp but I am afraid that heatsinks and case would eat up the whole budget. Do not want to go into tubes due to my limited electronics knowledge.

Any recommendations on DIY amplifiers that sound better than gainclone?

Thanks.

Lets say my budget is $350. But that's not really a fixed number since I have a lot of parts (heatsinks, transformers and other parts) left from previous projects that I could certainly use for the new amp.

Rod Elliott's P101 would probably fit the bill. Or the GB150, also from down under.

you can build the F5 for right around $350, if 25Wpc will do it for you. to get within striking distance of the performance of that amp with a commercial one, you're probably looking at spending more than $1k (maybe a lot more), and that's just for a used piece.

I am in the same boat, would love to build an F5 turbo, but don't know if it will be enough. the Elliot p101 is appealing!

"Gainclone" projects often limp along without a first-rate power supply section. The big National Semiconductor power amp chips can turn in much better performance than usual if the power supply gets the attention it deserves. And NO, I don't work for NatSemi!

The P101 looks really good. Though it probably needs similar heatsinks as the F5. Another forum suggested Quickie pre-amp that runs on batteries. Maybe somehow I can manage to build both with my budget? Gotta revise my letter to Santa. Hope it is not too late.
