Looking for a Phono Pre-Amp.

Anyone have suggestions on a decent Phono pre-amp. priced as low as possible
Im looking at adding a TT to my Pioneer VSX-920 wich does not have Phono jacks, I was thinking of hooking it up through my CD-R/ Tape in jacks and I hear I will need a Pre to run this way.
What do youall think is the best bang for the buck for this setup.? By the way I will be running a Mitsubishi DP-EC20 with a Shure V15 Type IV cart. I havent got a stylus yet but Im leaning towards a Jico-sas, what do you guys think of those?

Yes you will need a pre.

If you're handy with a soldering iron the Hagerman Bugle is a nice kit.

If not, I like the NAD PP2.
 
If you give us and idea of what your budget is I am sure you will get lots of suggestions.

G'day all, thanks for the pictures. They confirm that the Bugle is a three dual op amp design.

Interestingly enough my preferred DIY phono stage the Elliott Sound Products P06 is a two op amp design. Interesting. Regards, Felix aka catman.

For $ 120.00 new and typically $ 85.00 on Audiogon it's tough to beat the NAD PP2. It will handle both MM and MC cartridges. If you want to take the time to build one, the guys are spot on with the Hagerman Bugle. That's my next project. Hmmm.....maybe a XMAS present?

Thanks guys I will check out the NAD, I can handle a soldering iron ok but Im treading on new ground and just got finished with some other (projects) and would like to get this TT up and going ASAP........thanks again!
 
Dumb question

I have been considering a phono pre-amp for a while now - and this may be a dumb question, but...

I have an AudioTechnica AT-LP120 (which has a switchable built in pre-amp)
with a Shure M97X cartridge,
running through a Harmon Kardon 3308.
Speakers are AR-4ax.

Which of these scenarios would theoretically produce the best results:

1. Using the turntable's pre-amp
2. Using the phono stage on the Harmon Kardon
3. Buying an NAD PP-2

Any help/thoughts would be appreciated...

Frankly I doubt any of the 3 would make a noticeable difference. If you have to choose 3 which requires further spending, I'd rather get a Jico SAS instead and clip it into your Shure, and go for either 1 or 2.
