Looking for advice on pairing HPM-40s

One of my best friends just celebrated his birthday and much to my surprise decided to gift himself a vinyl record - odd because he doesn't have a record player, nor speakers/receiver.

After a couple of round-about questions, I got it out of him that he's keen on buying a whole system further down the line but the money needed to invest is a holding him back. (speakers being an issue)

I have a mint and refoamed pair of HPM-40s and am now looking at local options for receivers and turntables that would start him up on this beautiful journey :)

Would any Torontonian Audio Karma members have some advice as to which receivers would be a good match? Also for turntables?
I've been looking mostly at Pioneer receivers but maybe I could get a better deal with a Marantz or Sansui?

Many thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction!

Below are some of the units I found (although in terms of turntables, haven't started a list yet)

HPM 40s can only handle 40 watts, so lots of power is unnecessary (but do not clip the amp).

I would buy one of the Pioneer 3600s. They are solid and I've never seen a broken one, out of several I have owned. They sound good, have good tuners, and work well.

Thanks for the advice! I'm wondering if the SX-770 (http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/ele/3435014095.html) would be a good fit as well. Isn't it rated at 35w / channel at 8ohms?

I would not buy a sx-770. It's overpriced, and underperforming. It's a HUMAN generation older than the SX-3600s. And you have your pick of three different ones it looks like.

Fair enough, thanks!

This one's still available:

and after having owned an SX-750 it wouldn't be a bad choice, no?

The 3600:

was described by the owner: "The bass knob was, unfortunately, broken off, and has been glued back in place. Is not ideal, but works okay. Otherwise is a very nice unit. "

Leading me toward the SX-650 - which unfortunately has peeling veneer from what I can see.
