Looking for any information on these MTX Oaktron speakers.

Bought six of each of these speakers. One set is 5.5 inch and the other is 8 inch. I don't know if they need crossovers or anything. I have a set hooked up and they sound fine without.

Just picked them up as hobby speakers but have been struggling to find information (wattage, ohms, frequency response, etc) about them. mainly need info on the 8 inch one. I found some info on the 5.5 inch. I even emailed MTX about specs on them, no luck.

The 8" is a "full range" driver (to a degree :)) with a "whizzer" cone taking care of the high frequencies. Top end is probably around 14-15kHzor possibly less. They can sound decent in an open baffle design. The 5.5s may well be midrange drivers...either that, or woofers for a small enclosure.
 
They look nicely made, with stout magnets. Definitely some potential there. If you could find someone with a PC-driven driver tester gadget you could get the T/S parameters and impedance curves and you'd be on your way.

I don't think the little one is a woofer, definitely picks up higher frequencys than the 8. Thanks for the info! I have them stuffed in some huge old Knight cabinets and they sound good just straight wired in with no crossovers.

I went ahead and hooked a set of them up a few nights ago. They sound great never been used before me. I'm planning on make a Zu Aduio style speaker cabinets for them.

They sound ok as is for now and this is gonna be my first attempt at making some speaker cabinets. Definitely would prefer to have a woofer but for now a little bass blocker for the 5.5 inch and the 8 inch for the low end will make a decent first test pair of speakers :D I have a couple small woofer options to pair with them if I feel like the low end is lacking.
 
Can't offer a whole lot. The little guy is model 5C10, it's wide range and fairly similar to the 5 inch wide range drivers used in small Hot Spot and Bullfrog monitors.

When I said woofer I was referring to the 8" as the woofer. Anyway it sounds like a workable plan, come back and let us know how it works out.

Curious about one thing. What is the quality level of the Knight enclosures? Everything else they made was cheap and junky. Don't know how bad you can screw up wood, but I wouldn't put it past them. Most other stuff branded Allied was garbage too.

they probably are not perfect speaker boxes, but they don't look bad and they sounded ok with a single 8 and 5 inch wired in. Gonna make a face plate for them and add a couple more speakers to utilize the space better. They are plywood with fiberglass dampening pads. I like them though. They serve their purpose.

So they are made of plywood. So must be OK. Finishes, grill cloths etc can always be tweaked. I bought a pair of enclosures from Lafayette in the 70s, and they were made of flake core, or particle board, or whatever sawdust mixed with glue is called. MDF is also garbage. Denser than wood, yes. But spill a glass of water on it and you might as well haul it out to the garbage. If your baffle board is screwed in and not glued, you can always take it out and modify it or even replace it if you want new cutouts. Sorry for my dissing Knight, but I briefly owned an amp of theirs, and it was so crappy it earned the distinction of being the shortest lived component I ever owned.

No problem man. I got the cabinets as part of bulk deal with a neighbor. I had never even heard of Knights before. The fronts screw in so i lucked out on that endeavor. I actually liked the speakers that were in them but they were pretty much blown. The original speaker didn't look cheap or junky. But i know nothing about knight speakers. Wish all speakers still had the nice screw posts.

Knight was the house brand of Allied Radio, a major mail order seller back in the day. They also had several retail stores in the Chicago area. Radio shack bought them out in 1971. They had various OEM, and even some name brands, make their stuff to be marketed under the Knight and Allied names. Like I said, it would be hard to screw up a wood cabinet, but their electronics were pretty substandard. The main Allied store on Western ave was pretty awesome tho. They sold most of the major brands, but always tried to sell you their stuff if they could. We had quite a few retail outlets back then, Allied, Olson, Midwest, Pacific, Playback, Musicraft, Devon probably others I forgot. Could tell you a lot of stories, but then you don't want to hear some old man dribbling out tales from the good old days.
 
These Knight 1280 cabinets use Knight 820 (Electro Voice LS12a) 12 inch with whizzer cone drivers. They sound very good, -8db @ 30 hz, then flat from 40 to 14000 hz with a 2 db peak at 1000 hz
I don't think they meet the requirements to be called crappy. I hear them as a darn good full range box speaker made out of old fashion low tech plywood.
To bad your drivers are damaged.
