Looking for bookshelf speaker reccs based on my system ...

Hi y'all I would appreciate some advice in my hunt for some new speakers.

I have assembled my current system around a pair of Vandersteen 2ce speakers and I like how it sounds but y am moving to a house with a smaller listening space and unfortunately I don't think the Vandersteens are going to fit so I'm looking at getting a pair of bookshelf speakers that will do my other equipment justice. I had my eye on either ADS 710s or Dynaco A25s.

My amp is a McCormack DNA 0.5 Gold Mod ( 100W into 4 Ohms ) and my preamp is a Don Sachs Sp14. Would these be overkill for either of these speakers ? Any other reccs that might be a good fit ?

Are you sure they won’t fit ? Those are some epic speakers .
I have floor standers in my tiny bedroom.
Your going to need some flagship amazing bookshelf’s to be in comparison with Vandersteen 2ce speakers.

Oh I definitely think they fit. My girlfriend on the other hand .....
 
The point about footprint is a good one. If you want to minimize the intrusiveness of the speakers, you will want something that can be placed near the wall (unlike the Vandersteens).

Regarding your amp...it's definitely not overkill from a power standpoint. Many popular bookshelf speakers have about the same sensitivity as the 2Ce's (86dB or thereabouts). It's hard to build a high-quality, true bookshelf-sized speaker with high sensitivity.

For example, the Monitor Audio speakers mentioned above are spec'ed at 88dB, and the Harbeths are 84dB.

Besides, more power is always better than not enough.

And if you meant "overkill" from a quality standpoint if used to drive Dynaco A25s of ADS 710s, I guess you could say that the speakers might not be able to fully display the amp's capabilities. Looked at another way, the amp will get the very best these speakers can deliver. I like the Dynacos...they are fun, if not particularly accurate.

I have a pair of Silver 6 petite towers. What I love about them is purity of tone through the mids and excellent highs. I also love my Bryston Mini-T speakers. These speakers have similar premium cerametallic drivers. The Silver 100 has an eight-inch driver, which I find appealing for decent bass - my Brystons have eight-inch woofers with impressive bass for a relatively small speaker.

The Monitor Audio drivers with their high-tech dimpled surface and gold tweeter still continue to wow me with the best midrange I've owned from dynamic cones, and that includes several ADS models over the years, that I really loved at the time. My two cents, keep the change.

That one bookshelf was $7k a pair! Pulsar
You should ask your girl if she’s got 7 grand to help you pay for your replacement speakers.
Bookshelf + stand takes up same space ......

ha, I'm sure she would love that. A big issue is the vandersteens dont really sound anywhere near there best when up against a wall, they are super finicky with placement and usually like to be a couple feet from anything. Good point about stands taking up same space though.

Yes, too powerful for Dynaco A 25 duty, too overdesigned, too overdamped. Look for 50 watts/channel and low damping factor. The ADS like more power. But that amp and preamp may be a poor match for either. Too modern sounding.
 
Too powerful for Dynaco A25s? That's just not true. I assume his amp has a volume control. And the A25s are only a few dB more sensitive than his Vandersteens.

Too modern sounding? I had a pair temporarily hooked up to my Parasound Halo 2.1 amp (it's pretty modern) when I first bought it last year, and they sounded as good as they ever have.

The OP could clip a 50 watt amp if he wanted to really push the Dynacos. Why would he possibly sell a very nice amp and replace it with one of lesser quality and a lower power rating?

As for the ADS 710s...6 ohms, 92dB sensitivity, recommended amp is up to 150w. The OP's amp is close to ideal for them.
