Looking for cheap replacement stylus for AT122LP p-mount

Hello,

I have a Sony linear tracker (PS-LX510) that is in need of some TLC and I'm not sure that it is 100% functional. It has an AT122LP in the arm, but there's no diamond on the end of the cantilever. I have seen some threads about Shibata and line contact stylus replacements for this cartridge, but I'm looking for something cheap in case the turntable doesn't work. Can anyone recommend a stylus?

Thank you

As above, and if all works out pick up a AT 132 EP while you can. It will be a nice affordable upgrade stylus.

That's a generic. Pretty sure r-b77 meant for you to get a genuine ATN132EP-- confirm that it's in stock before ordering. If they're out, maybe this ATN132EP. It won't be cheap, but it'll be good. Heck, another ATN122LP would be good, too.

peri: If you don't want to spend much, but still want a decent original needle, an Ebay vendor named "wolfsbigbadgarage" currently offers new old stock SS445E/Us for 36 bucks, which are renamed AT122EPs - so that would basically buy you an ATN122EP plus a spare AT102P family body with accessories. If you'd like to spend more, I'd second the sugggestion to try an original ATN132EP, provided Stereoneedles actually still offers these for ca. 70 bucks.

I currently use an AT-142LP cartridge, which your cart is a member of the same series. I will soon upgrade my stylus to an ATN152LP from http://www.stereoneedles.com/audio-technica.html--you could look there for styli for your AT-122EP. Also, I previously did some research and documented the possible styli that will fit my cart, as well as your cart, in the discourse located at: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/audio-technica-stylus-at142lp.788889/page-2. I prefer using Audio-Technica styli--but that is just me. However, I understand your position in discovering if the TT even works. I would suggest looking for
ATN102P, ATN-112EP, or using a compatible generic for testing. Good luck!

Are these good replacements? Anyone have luck with this?

The AT92ECD was a very good p-mount cartridge for the price, but Audio Technica has discontinued that particular model, and prices have risen on the remaining stock.

The AT85EP that is still in production is pretty much the same cartridge & stylus, with the main difference that it does not come with a p-mount adaptor.

SA-708: Looks like the AT85EP doesn't sport the anodised alu cantilever anymore.

wm107: If you'd like something better for not that much more, Ebay vendor "wolfsbigbadgarage" still doesn't seem to out of AT450s, which basically are renamed AT316EPs (while the AT92E(CD) would just be equivalent to the AT311EP). Current price is ca. 60 bucks, which still is very fair for a model with a needle, that sports nude diamond with rectangular shank.

Thanks, I missed that detail. Either way, AK members need to get out of the habit of suggesting the AT92ECD every time someone asks for p-mount cartridge suggestions, now that it has been discontinued.

Agree.

The AT 92 ECD was usually suggested for those that wanted to spend the minimum to get their TT running and be ready for sale.

For personal enjoyment, the old Panasonic Pmount factory cartridge outfitted with the E ,HE or SAS stylus of old were hard to beat at a very god price. :)

If you just want to have a cheap stylus to test the turntable with there are quite a few generics on E-Bay for cheap. Then if it's good to go get your self a new at cartridge or a good stylus for it.
Like this one no affiliation BTW. https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEEDLE-STYLUS-4212-DE-DEC-Audio-Technica-ATN112EP-AT112EP-AT122EP-Signet-TK1Ea/132290081513?hash=item1ecd1a72e9:g:0N0AAOSwT5tWFwjr&_sacat=0&_nkw=AT122LP&_from=R40&rt=nc&_trksid=m570.l1313
Pfanstihl needles any good? Im putting a player back together for a friend; an sl-bd-20. Noticed the stilus was bent somehow; would there be any plus to trying to reneedle this cart? Or would i be better off grabbing a new cart? I was a bit worried about tracking force with a new cart as this damn table has a factory set counterweight.

I am not a big fan and have had some issues with them in the past. For a basic stylus that is pretty good I would try to find a EVG instead. I only recommended it for a test stylus for the op's TT due to cost if the TT is not serviceable.
