looking for decent budget towers

so basically been looking on kijiji for some tower speakers because I initially found a set of ultra linears which apparently have a bad rep from 70's on I had a pair of these in my shop and the bass was unreal eventhough they lacked on the highs alot u could fill that in with another speaker but i missed out. I currently have some bestbuy precision acoustics they have four 5inch drivers and a 3/4' tweeter they sound like theyre under water very muffled not happy with them. Im running them with my onkyo 7.1 box kit amp . from reading this basically all the canadian made stuff like nuance or pro linear and so on are garbage lol. was looking at some cs k735 pioneers but heard they need heavy modification to sound good and they want alot for them. also seen some technics sb t200 online as well for 120. not sure how they would sound with a modern amp. Anyways I know typically you dont mix old with new but the old stuff always sounded so good but may not be good for movies as well. Im new to this forum just trying to figure some stuff out.also a big van of cerwin vega cabinets but not sure how they are with a home theater and especially a small 7.1 reciever. also found wharfedale delta 90's cabinets look not bad for a 100. thanks

You have to decide what do you want at the end: home theater or 2 channel rig for music.
It is possible (in theory) to have one performing both tasks well enough, but it wouldn't be cheap!

Not sure why the myths continue about "HT speakers" vs. "music speakers".

Sure, if you buy a HTiB then I suppose one could loosely say you got HT speakers. But, from a practical standpoint, you have OK/good/decent speakers or you don't.

That said, there are some HT speakers with controlled dispersion patterns and all that, but they're generally not the ones people are talking about when they're pejoratively describing speakers as "HT speakers".

the biggest difference between HT speakers and music speakers is the form factor. Not much else. HT speakers have been made to look tall and skinny. Good speakers are good speakers, period.

As a general statement, I'd say newer/modern speakers tend to be taller and skinnier than their older brethren.

What is your real budget for speakers? Are you going to do a 5.1 or more system, or using an HT receiver, but will use only in Stereo? I see some brands mentioned here recommended often, but with the caveat "if you keep looking", let me add; for the next years and by the time your hearing is gone you will find some of the recommendations. Also,I see you mentioning speakers in the $100.00 range, ADS L880, when they come up for sale, sell for around $400.00/pair. MarZutra gave you real world recommendations which I would agree with, but in order to be more specific, your real budget is very important.
