Looking for help locating G-9000 Tuning/Volume knob

Any ideas on how to procure a G-9000 Tuning / Volume knob.
I believe these were also the same knobs that were used on the G-8000, G-22000 and G-33000 as far as I know.
I am also looking for the speaker terminal plate for the G-9000 or ideas on how to retrofit as I have a couple of these that are broken.
I have been searching the bay and Googling.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

The G-8000 knobs are not the same, and if I had to guess, I would say the bigger G's knobs would be bigger.

I think those knobs will be tough to find.

Indeed. The G-7000-9000 use the same sized knobs, but there were two variants. One version had a thin mirror-polished band on the front at the outside diameter of the knob face. The second version had a much wider polished band, and tbe difference is quite noticeable side by side. It appears to me the G-7000 and 8000 mostly received the knobs with the thin band, where the 9000 primarly were fitted with the thick version. However, I've seen a few thin band 9000's in the past as well, so appears to be have been a running change, or production variation from different suppliers maybe.

The G-22 and 33K, I believe, were larger still than the knobs used on their smaller siblings. And you'd not find either of those being parted anyway. Finding a G-8000 or 9000 being parted is almost unheard of for that matter.

The G-9000 volume and tuning knobs are not the same as the G-8000 knobs.

The G-9000 volume/tuning knobs are about 5mm larger than the G-8000.

Plus, the knurling on the G-9000 knob is different.

@Robisme, is the difference in diameter only at the face of the knobs, or also at the base? I've long been of the understanding that the difference in diameter was just due to the polished band being wiider on the G-9000 knobs, and that the 7000 and 8000 knobs would fit, but obviously wouldn't look right given the difference in styling that is clearly seen in your pictures. If I'm mistaken in thinking that, I'd like to know for futrure reference.

Interesting , the service manual, lists the same part numbers for the G8 and G9 volume and tuning knobs. It identifies them as R-7 type for volume and U-7 type for tuning. No difference for the two models. This could be another example of variations between suppliers during production.

The G-22/33 knobs are much larger diameter.

Pete, thanks for that insight. The knob style variation on the big G models has been discussed here before a long time back, and it was my recollection that the two types were interchangable as far as size, but that obviously they looked quite different. I'm not certain, but thought the G-7000 was identical in size to the 8000 and 9000 as it was built on the same chassis. I knew the 22 and 33K were unique into themselves in all respects.

What is interesting is that most 8000's I've ever seen had the thin band style knobs, and yet right now on eBay there is an 8000 with the thick band knobs as more commonly seen on tbe 9000. So, it appears that the difference wasn't by model but was simply a running change or a variation by different suppliers.

This kind of thing is much like the discussion a few months ago about the SR-929 turntables showing two distinct versions with several subtle differences between them. I doubt we will ever know the real reason for these variations as they were lost to history when Sansui folded up shop.

I owned both the G9K and G8K at the same time.
The knobs mentioned were the same on them both.

So poster needs to see what is on his unit before ordering.

I'm pretty sure the G8000 and G9000 are larger in dimension than the G7000. I think the G7000 is the same size as the G6000.

^Ok. Nice to know that. I didn't realize they did an intermediate sized chassis between the small G models (2000-5000) and the 8000-9000. Or was the G-5000 built on the same medium size as the 6000 & 7000? I know the G-2000 and 3000 were much smaller.

Interesting in that the 5050-9090 that preceded the G models, and the Z series receivers that came after (1980-81) only had small and large footprint versions, no medium size.

Just to add to the confusion, the eBay G-8000 first three numbers of the serial number are 818 and so are mine. The G-9000 I have here first three are 817.

Also, the main part of the knobs on the G-9000 I have here are .4mm wider than my G-8000. So, negligible.

I just pulled the volume knobs and the G-9000 knob fits on the G-8000.

Thanks for posting that. So, it looks like if one could source a complete set of knobs (yes, a pipedream, no doubt) from an 8000 they could be used on a 9000 - and vice versa - irrespective of the style. But, finding just one knob for one of these is an undertaking requiring the patience of a saint, and likely a willingness to spend A LOT of coin just for one knob.

It would sure be nice if a home/prosumer machining lathe rig that could do this sort of work as reproductions was available in the same vein as 3D printers or laser cutter/etchers. Someone could do quite well at making and selling knobs to those of us who have gear that was abused in it's prior life. I avoid "scratrch and dents" and incomplete units for this very reason, as I was have been frustrated before - sometimes for years at a stretch - trying to source a cosmetic part for an otherwise nice piece of kit.

The tuning and volume knobs on my G-9000s are all 50mm diameter. Rob yours looks to be 53mm. The next question is are the aluminum finisher cups behind the knob different sizes as well?

- Pete

cups.

G-9000
Inside diameter - about 55mm
Outside diameter - about 62mm

G-8000
Inside diameter - about 55mm
Outside diameter - about 60mm

I pulled the knobs and had to measure across the top of the volume shaft. Didn't want to scratch anything with calipers.

Rob

If the ODs are different does that mean the faceplates are also different to accept the different diameter cups? Hard to believe they would modify the faceplates.

- Pete

Sorry, by outer diameter I meant the ring that is against the face plate.

May be a thicker ring.
