Hello EVERYONE,

This is my first thread but have been lurking for a month. Earlier this month I bought my first vintage Marantz...a 2250 for my listening room. LOVE IT!

I'll get to it. My living room set up is a 5.1 system using a Denon AVR2300w with B&W 683 towers and B&W 685 S2 rears. I'm using an OPPO BDP 103 for movies. Adding an Xbox One X this weekend to the mix.

In the listening room I put the Marantz 2250 with a Sony BDP-S2000ES as my CD player. Using my college JBL 2600s as the speakers.

A couple of days ago I switched the rears in the 5.1 to the JBLs and put the B&W bookshelf's in the listening room. Seemed like a no brainer to me.

I wanted to lay the groundwork for the question. FYI Im good at listening but not great at technical. LOL I have been looking at the Marantz cd6006 to buy to replace the Sony Blu Ray player in the listening room. Great price of $359 at accessories4less.com. Would the cd6006 work well with the 2250? What if I switched the OPPO with the Sony in the living room? Better sound? The Sony takes 30 plus seconds to load a cd. So frustrating. The living room is where I want the best movie experience. The listening room is to kick back and listen to AMAZING sound! So I guess pros and cons to switching the Oppo and the Sony or to buy the Marantz 6006 and mate it to the 45 year old 2250? Should the new Xbox one X play in to this at all since it is a 4k/Blu Ray player? THANKS SO MUCH!

First of all welcome aboard!!!

Your question regarding the Marantz cd6006 working well with the 2250 and the B&W's supposes that their is someone or someones here who have that exact combination. I'll be interested to see how many people will reply who can attest to their compatibility.

Seeing as you already own the Oppo & Sony why not take some time and do a compare & contrast? and let YOUR ears be the deciding factor
 
I don’t know why the CD6006 wouldn’t work fine with the 2250. It’s not like there are really compatibility problems with analog outs on CD players. There are certainly fewer variables with a CD player and receiver than with a turntable. It’s a line level signal. You shouldn’t have to worry about loading and output voltage and all that.

My local dealer was trying to sell me on the CD5005 to upgrade the 26 year old Onkyo that’s currently hooked up to my 2250B. But I haven’t gone for it as of yet.

I don’t know enough about that Sony to know how much of an upgrade the CD6006 would be in terms of the DAC, analog output, or transport. I’m sure it would give faster startup. I also don’t know if that or the Oppo would have better sound. The best way to find out is try them both and see which you like better.

As said above, try the disc players you have, switched around. No experience with that Marantz.
I've found some old Sony non ES CD changers inferior to modern NAD 546 or Marantz BD8002 Blu-ray from 2009, I have.
Yes, Blu-ray players are often slower reading discs than CD players. My Marantz takes a while.

Yes, welcome to AK!

I really, really love my Marantz SACD player. It is totally free of what I call "gratuitous tizz", sounds a little dark in direct comparison with my other digital sources, but not on its own, and is the digital I like best. I had a Marantz CD5001 several years ago that was serviceable, but not really any less fatiguing than my 35 year old Denon DCD620. That was the thing with CDs for me, for a while - how long could I listen to them without wanting to go back to records. But the CD6006 is one model higher and five models newer, and other modern Marantz stuff has sounded pretty good to me. I think their 'HDAM' technology has trickled down from higher models over time. I think it would likely sound different than the Oppo and the Sony. Which you would prefer I wouldn't try to guess.

I get the idea of trying out the Oppo with the 2260 to see what my ears like better but are there technical things that I should look in to? I'm wondering about things like which of the three machines have a DAC or don't. I'm thinking the Sony (2007) doesn't have one at all but I may be wrong. I'm pretty sure the Oppo does have one. Does the Xbox one X have a DAC?

Are there other technical things that I should be looking at or researching. I'm pretty sure the Oppo will out movie the Sony and the Xbox. Like I said I want the best movie experience in the living room and the best sound experience in the other room.

They ALL have DACs as does the Xbox does, so you needn't wonder about that.

With regards to the movie experience there's only one way to find out take your time over a period of time and try the Oppo, the Sony & the Xbox and see which one you prefer. A good source of info going forward in that vein is the Home Theater & Video sub forum here at AK

I have a Onkyo DVD player that I use mostly for music and though it's a decent sounding playing, I think that I may be able to do better with a decent separate DAC, which is something that I'm looking to eventually pick up. I wonder if you've considered buying a good quality separate DAC unit and using one of the CD players that you already have as simply a transport and running an optical cable out of it to the DAC for the digital/analog conversion part? I personally, like that kind of solution much better as CD players always seem fail eventually so I'm not crazy about typing up too much money in a really great sounding player. I don't have experience with DACs but it seems that these are the things that really determine the quality of sound...

I really like the idea of a separate DAC but when I look them up it seems like they can get really expensive. The Cambridge Audio DacMagic 100 one is $200. Doesn't the $359 Marantz cd6006 for $359 seem like the better deal?

Any suggestions on an external DAC for the Sony BDP-S2000ES? BTW the DAC inside is a TI/BB PCM-1791A...

External, stand alone DAC's can get really expensive yet they can also be had for relatively short money. If you're that intent on getting one you could spend less then a Ben Franklin on something as simple as a Fiio D3 or say a Schiit Modi. This way if they aren't what you expected them to be you're not out a lot of money.

My suggestion is to learn more about them and see what others are suggesting over in the dedicated DAC forum here at AK, which is a great source of info, comments & suggestions

That Marantz CD player should be fine. As with anything there are different levels of sound reproduction with CD players and it's just a matter of how much you are willing to spend and the time you are willing to put into finding the best bang for the buck. you may even have fun finding an older CD player that would be great. Pretty much all but the oldest CD players have digital out for a stand alone DAC so I wouldn't worry about that too much.
Sounds to me the SONY Blue Ray player issue is that it is slow so getting a new DAC doesn't seem to address your issue. I think I would just get a separate CD player for the dedicated music system and call it a day.

Get a streamer like a Bluesound Node 2i and go that route with your CD's ripped to a hard drive. That way you can also stream to the music system. Leave the Sony BR player connected for the occasional CD use. I believe that Blue Ray player can be connected via HDMI to your AVR and then analog RCA out to the Marantz receiver at the same time, no?

I just saw on Accessories4Less they are selling the Marantz ND8006 for $799. Am I crazy not to jump on this and sell the Sony? Tell my I'm wrong but better CD player, better DAC, able to stream, digital media player, and Bluetooth. With this technology I think I am future proofing myself if I decide to throw my cd collection on my laptop. I also love to stream Spotify. This price is $400 less than anywhere else and free shipping. What do you all think?

I get it, rarely do I, either.

But, these make most EXCELLENT cd players. I spun mine just last night, and low-level detail, and a rock-solid platform is a great catch at the prices they go for.
 
I wouldn't spend a ton on a new player... I'd get a more mid-range one and then a better than dirt cheap DAC. I've always found that DVD/CD players eventually fail so I figure why have too much money tied up in that? I wouldn't want a top level DAC that's tied to a player with a transport that likely won't last nearly as long as the DAC portion of it...
