Looking for smallish powered speaker with SPDIF input with volume control

This is for my granddaughter in a college dorm setting so it should be no bigger than a shoe box. The volume control doesn't absolutely need to be remotely controlled although that would be nice. It will be used partly for music listening but more often for gaming.

A one piece solution (not counting the remote) is an absolute must. An HDMI or whatever converter to SBDIF is not acceptable.

The presence of Bluetooth or RCA jacks or wired digital input is immaterial. No harm but they won't be used.

An Amazon search for SPDIF speaker, by the way, presents page after page of the converter non-solution. I'll be checking eBay. At least I understand its search engine options.

The associated equipment is a Playstation 4 (or is it 3?) and a monitor with no speakers. In any case, the only audio out is the optical digital. There is HDMI, but as I noted, the monitor has no speakers. One could grab a breakout box or adapter of some sort, but the idea of adding boxes and cables is not at all welcome.

By the way, I'm still using an early AVA Transcendance preamplifier.

A direct optical input to powered speakers (set) is going to severely limit your choices, and cost much more. I would suggest a DAC with the necessary I/O’s. They are not expensive FiiO makes several I have a couple of examples, very good. With one of these in hand I would suggest a good set of computer speakers. For the money the best I know of is The Klipsch Pro Media 2.1. Logitech makes an bunch with a wide range of prices.
