Looking for the name of a science fiction movie

I'm trying to figure out the name of a science fiction movie I saw years ago about some man (scientist?) who uses another man in an experiment who sees something about reality or the universe that is so intense it blows his mind. I remember in the movie, they showed weird dramatic cosmic or astronomical scenes. Later in the movie, the first man experiences it and then he's shown in a wheel chair I think in a hospital or mental hospital and he looks like his mind was blown by it, ie. he became traumatized or went crazy.

Can anyone think of this movie? The movie may have been made in the 1970's or 1980's.

Sounds a bit like "2001 A Space Odyssey". Your description matches the later part of the film quite well.

Well - I can think of maybe a couple ...
The scene in Brainstorm where the one engineer splices a mind tape together of the moment of orgasm so it just loops over and over ...
In the film is also another mind-tape they assemble that is toxic delusion/hatred/paranoia/ meant as a weapon and nearly tears Christopher Walken apart
when he views it without any filter ...

maybe a sequence in Lawnmower man? (its been ages since I saw that one) -
he is disturbed in real life yet a "god" in the virtual reality world

some of this sounds like Sleeper from Woody Allen
