Ears for Beers
So I just love the McIntosh sound, always have! I’ve been on a steady upgrade path for a good 10 years. I think I’m ready to take the plunge.
I found an ma252 for $2900 brand newish, store demo. I really liked the way it sounded and at that price I think it would work. However I’m wondering if there’s a better entry around the 3k mark all in. I’m not opposed to buying used if recently serviced, or if the price is really awesome.
Of course the dream move would be a tube pre, and tube amp. Meters are another thing making me iffy on the 252, I just love that esthetic!!
I don’t want to regret spending that kind of money, and probably should wait till I get enough to buy something closer to what I’d rather have.
I’m open to the advice on upgrade paths. I have home theater system with pre outs, so one path would be to get a 7 channel amp with meters, send two to a preamp in my listening room until I can buy an awesome Mac two channel pre with home theater bypass and have an all inclusive rig. I have Cornwall 1 and forte 2 in that setup so I’m sure it would sound incredible while I wait for the preamp. Or I could just get the integrated for my listening room and move it upstairs to my dining room setup which does a lot of entertaining of guests, then put the dream setup in the listening room years down the road as money allows.
I’m a little nervous about spending my all in budget on used gear which would obviously get me more for my money, but may lead to additional cost for repairs if something goes squirrelly.
Thanks in advance for the advice, and go easy on me, I don’t really know what I don’t know yet, you know??
Thanks,
