Los Lobos' Good Morning Azatlan on SACD

It's a 2.0 SACD (with the hybrid layer) by MoFi.

Are you kidding me? What an amazing recording!! What an awesome rendition in the mix.

Listening to it fairly loud (the SPL meter on my iPad says I'm peaking around. 95 or 96 bB.

Sound is full, almost viscerally thick. Kick drums are whomping up on me (and I'm not running my subwoofer). The dynamics are outta this world.

Detail, detail, detail. As one guy once said to me, it's like your system just melts away, and all you're left with is the band! Total suspension of disbelief.

I've got the old CD. How would you compare the two?
 
I had the original CD too. First, it doesn't have the goofy autoplay menu /splash screen feature if you drop the disk in a PC. It'll just play the CD layer.

Same great songs, so you know the music is awesome.

Just a lot more detail. Steve Berlin's baritone sax (one of the best parts of any Los Lobos album since he joined the band) sounds even growlier. It seems to me that the dynamics are greater / wider... Especially in the percussion.

Songs like Luz de Mi Vida just sound so much more life-like. I think it's one of the better two-channel SACDs I have. The sound is almost as good as on the Kiko Live Blu Ray (which, if you don't have, but have a Blu Ray player that you play through a good audio system, is a must have demo disk if you want to show off what Blu Ray audio is capable of).

I bought my copy at a book store for $14.99 (I don't think they realized that it was something other than a CD).

Thanks for the review, cwall. Now I need to pick it up. On a related note, I've been waiting for the Kiko vinyl since spring.
 
Not sure if the 20th anniversary Kiko Live was or will be released on vinyl. I know this, though, the Blu Ray is one of the best sounding recordings I have in my collection (about 1,200 albums split along the lines of 40% vinyl (including audiophile vinyl like MoFi and direct-to-disk LPs), 50% CDs, and 10% various forms of hi-res digital (24-bit FLAC, SACD, DVD-A, and, of course, Blu Ray).

Unfortunately, I don't know if the Good Morning Azatlan SACD is still in print. I think I've also seen This Time (one of the three Mitchell Froom-produced Los Lobos albums, including Kiko, Colossal Head, and This Time) on SACD.
 
Great album. Not sure I need the SACD though. I just saw them with Los Lonely Boys this past summer and the were running around 110db (about 20 feet out from left array) live in a 3,500 outdoor pavilion.
 
I've seen 'em three or four times up here. Once at a small club in downtown Pontiac, and the other times at free music festivals in downtown Detroit.

I gotta say I love it when you get Cesar Rosas, David Hidalgo, and Louie Perez all jammin' on guitar at the same time.

When they do Just a Man on the Kiko Live Blu Ray, it's an incredible bluesy jam with Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo trading off on lead a la the Allman Brothers.
 
Yeah, in fact, on Tin Can Trust, I think one of the tracks was written by a former member of the Dead. Sadly, t's about the weakest track on the album.
