Lost a 'Bay auction due to it posted here?

No offense....but why would anyone in their right mind.....tell hundreds of drooling gear-addicts.....about a great deal on e-bay....especially if YOU intend to bid on it!?
Hey guys I'm gonna be out of town for a few days. I'll certainly miss my supermodel, sex-addicted girl friend....who lives at 134 Main Street, Apt. C,...... .....get the point!?

Steve

There was an article in the Local news paper around here in CT about how the audio boards are driving the price of vintage equipment thru the roof.
It's true!

If it's something I want, either for personal use or to make a few $$$$, I don't tell anyone. If I can't afford it or don't want something, I'll let you guys know. The used audio market has helped keep food on the table and a roof over my family's head for 9 months now. I do however, miss one now and then. Brad

steve,

What city do you live in? :scratch2:

But seriously, regarding losing a 'bay auction due to it being posted here, I'm thinking more along the lines of you're watching it, and someone else posts it, therefore having the negative effect.

No way in heck anyone's gonna know (unless they read all the bidding history and knows your 'Bay name), so this is not a thread saying not to do it, or the like, just wondering if it's happened to anyone. It'd be impossible to impose such a marshal law like that anyhoo.

Now, about those few days you'll be on the road...:D

Stuff I already own and like and think there is value for another AK'er I will post links here for. Stuff I want to bid on that I don't have yet I say nothing. I believe most folks here already know how to search.

Not that saying nothing has helped any, usually the auctions go for more than I wanted to pay.

Best,

Paul :thmbsp:

I know I’m taking the less traveled road here, and this will probably get me flamed, but I would not be opposed to CL and Eprey links being eliminated from AK. I think it is hurting the buyers (Not the sellers) of all classes. Make the "Guests" work for it. Most of us do. And while many (Most?) postings here on AK are by “Regulars” I’m morally certain that there are some who quietly post it here, never admitting that they are the seller or otherwise connected. (I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine?)

The only thing positive I see about it is when someone posts something I have never seen/heard about, and it clicks that "Hey, I like that..." But is it necessary to post a link that will die in weeks anyway? Get the pic, post it so it will stay, and have your say about how cool this is.

As far as me bidding on anything that was posted, Eprey, CL or otherwise, the item has always gone ballistic or been gone by the time I got to it or it ended.

I’d much rather a forum was made for “Cool stuff that you don’t ordinarily see” and the D&S forum be de-emphasized as much as possible.

D&S now has 35 pages, and it is a fairly recent forum. @ 25 threads a page that is fast approaching 1000 threads. I realize some are for “What is this worth?” But again, what matters is already a matter of (temporary) public record simply by asking Eprey’s search function for closed sales… That is a lot closer to “Market value” than anyone’s guess here.

OK. I’ve wound down, Fire suit on, and

:lurk:

I agree. Jay

Without D&S it would be just like it was. . .Someone would be posting eBay links out in the regular forums. . .Believe it or not D&S was created to help control this behavior. . .

great topic - I think the AK forum helps drive up the real/perceived demand and speculation, and in turn, enables the sellers to get top dollar - these "created" external market forces are basically a bi-product of the whole discussion of vintage gear - this is just one facet of the marketplace as a whole though

that being said, I dispise what the eprey, CL, etc. market place has become pertaining to vintage audio - I think I posted the other day, that now I am so displeased that I have started looking at newer used gear (upscale), although I still crave the old silver just like always......

also, I have never been a "collector" who buys and sells, just a listener.......these guys on eprey who buy some silver one day, wait 2 whole days.......and then relist the same unit (like I never looked at their feedback and couldn't see what they were doing....or just paid for the damn item :wtf:)

to me..........it still about how it all sounds, the problem is I want to hear "how" it sounds from the older Sansui, Marantz, Kenwood, Pioneer, Yammie, etc. :scratch2: it's a vicious circle , and currently I am getting my :butt2: kicked

The way ebay works, I don't see why anyone would bid until the last minute. Early bidding could only push up the final price. Also a dead auction will often scare people off.

I collect old books and have (often) seen senseless prices paid because an auction gets hot and people lose their minds.

I understand that very well. However, if the board software could be set so links to designated IP's or domain names aren't allowed, then it would never be a significant issue. Could it be gotten around? Sure, but it would be more work for the poster, and more importantly, the link user to be using an auction number, and more work for the link user. In the case of CL harder it would be harder still...

I have to wonder how much disk space and server resources are going to support this habit. And after a few weeks the info is useless to boot, since neither site keeps anything long enough to be worth archiving.

what city did u say u were in?

On other boards that I frequent (non-audio, yes, there are non-audio boards!), there is a common rule that all must abide by:

Never post links to live auctions - only completed auctions.

I wholeheartedly agree with this mantra.

I bid early and bid what I'm willing to pay, that's it, I'm done. Sometimes I get something cheaper than for what I'm willing to pay, sometimes I pay what I'm willing and sometimes I don't get the thing.

That's that.

Over on the Lansing Heritage forum guys posting ebay auctions is becoming a pain and gets in the way of people trying to sell something using the site.

I agree although I wish more of my auction were linked here:D

Seriously though, for those of us who are interested in the actual gear and some limited pricing guide, linking is great AFTER the auction is over. We should not be giving free advertising to the sellers nor assisting to drive up the prices of the gear we are all so enjoying.

If the mods did away with it, I would certainly not be offended.

Just my .02

Tell ya what Barry, I would appreciate it if you INFORMED ME of your auctions!

I wonder if that eBay favorite seller deal will let you know about your auctions??

PM me if ya know how to do it. Did ya get the nineteen's yet?

how about changing to "only post your own auctions".... of course then the classifieds would be null and void.........

I am of the don't post it group and I firmly believe that opinions and views expressed here have had a big impact on prices.

Clarence,

You can indeed be notified of your Favorite Sellers most current postings. I will PM you with my link as I am sure we are not supposed to give any links to our auctions from the AK site:nono:

I do in fact have the ALtec Model 19's in the house but need to get them up to my listening room. Hopefully, I can get them moved up on Sunday and will first hook them up to a McIntosh MX-110 Tuner/Preamp with a MC-225 amp. I will also experiment with the MA-2275 but just sent it back to McIntosh for a minor service issue in one of the tube sockets. The gentleman I purchased the M19's from did have it hooked up when I went to pick up and although he was running some current Sony products, I was ABSOLUTELY floored by the sonic quality:yes: :thmbsp: :D

My wife however wants me to keep the Khorns because she thinks they look "pretty" and fit well in the corners:banana: I bet not many of you can make that claim! However, they are located in MY listening room so the decision will be mine ultimately but it will be a VERY difficult decision based on the very short audition I had. The bass seemed to come alive in the 19's and just meshed beautifully across the listening spectrum.

PM is on the way and I appreciate your interest in my items.

Barry
