Loudness pot set on one volume, need advice

Hello all, I'm new here. I just acquired a vintage GE Stereo Classic 7600 Integrated Amp. It's working fine except the loudness control is not working. It is quite loud. So I have opened the top and sprayed some contact cleaner in the pot. The control knob turns, but the volume does not change. Any suggestions?

Please explain........ "loudness in Quite loud or Quiet loud" IMO turn it off leave it off. bullshit circuits usually a consumer come on. "loudness button"
 
The loudness control knob turns, but the volume does not change. It is loud. I am asking how this can be fixed.

I believe that he mistakenly is talking about using a "loudness button or control as used at low listening levels" and you are talking about the knob (control) the controls the volume of the music. And on AK there is a lot a emotional response to the use of a loudness button, but that is a discussion for another thread and does not address your question.

It is the control that controls the volume of music? As I understand what you mean "quite loud" means that you cannot decrease the volume, is this correct?

If it is and you have given a good cleaning, it may be a couple of things. This is a common symptom of a bad ground connection to the volume control or it may be a defective control. Other things may come into play, but these are two common issues with this type of symptom.

You are correct I LIkE MUSIC, it is the control knob labeled "loudness" that turns, but I cannot control the volume.
If it is a bad ground connection to the volume control, how can I find out, and how is that fixed?

I have not seen one of these for awhile, but IIRC the control was labeled "volume" and the other control is labeled "contour". Is yours different?

Just to be sure that we are on the same page, turn both of the controls all the way counter clockwise.

What are your controls labeled?

Just to be sure that I am not completely wrong here...Is this what you have...And how are the controls labeled?

Yes that's it, except mine is the 7600 model. Where your "volume" control is, mine is labeled "loudness". Contour knob is same. I don't know what the "Tuner" is for. Mine is same, looks like you access it with a tool?
 
Below is a picture of a generic control.

The terminals circled in red would be the terminals that would be grounded. The terminals circled in blue would be the in coming signal and the terminals in the center would be the outgoing signal (that is varied by the position of the control).

With the amplifier unplugged, you can use the Ohm meter function of a DMM and measure the resistance from the center terminals (one section at a time) to the ground terminals. The resistance should change as you rotate the control and be maximum when the control is turned fully clockwise and minimum when the control is turned fully counter clockwise.

If this is the result that you get, then measure the resistance of the red circled terminals to ground, it should be fairly low. I do not have a schematic for this unit to give you exact numbers (I would expect it to measure fairly low, less than a couple of Ohms).
 
BTW, I do not know your experience level. Be careful, power supply capacitors can retain a charge even with the amplifier unplugged from the AC mains.
 
sorry for the error/ interpretation, I thought you were referring to a 'loudness' button. (Many amps included this feature imo I find annoying.)

The volume pot itself, has it been disconnected or evidence of being serviced?
