Lowther Hegmen Reproducer Speaker, The Radio People LTD. Who made this one?

I just purchased what I believe to be a Lowther Hegmen Reproducer. If it is real or built under license by the importer I know it is rare bird. I don't care if its a clone or a fake. Other then the Radio People LTD who built these under with approval from Lowther. Were there other Hi-Fi dealers importing drivers and the plaster horns for the Lowther models and building speakers under License? Not that I would expect anyone to know this. I did post a pic of the unit . Wife of the original owner said he bought it when on a trip through in the late 50"s or early 60's maybe the Philippines or Hong Kong , but the Philippines seemed to make sense to her. The unit is not label like the ones the Lowther importer in The Radio People ltd. did in that time frame with the Lowther imported drivers and horn from England. Dimensions are correct and the bolt pattern for the speaker in the plaster section is correct. Not sure if its a fake or built by a licensed importer? Regardless its dang cool and will spruce up the shop until I decide to restore or sell it to a safe home. I don't care if its a fake ,,,, its pretty cool. lights in the lower box and the works, it is just not a perfect match for the others . The edge of the lower cabinet has a rounded edge and the ones from Lowther or made by The Radio People LTD. have a sharp 90 edge.

Radio People LTD is (was?) a high end audio salon in the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. I've seen stacked original Quad ESLs in custom stands made by the same outfit that were imported to the Philippines.

Congrats, that speaker would be great in a mono hifi system!

Have you searched AK for some keywords? Use the search box at the top right, search Hegeman, "The Radio People" (use quotes for phrases more than one word that you want to find - otherwise you'll get all posts with 'radio' and 'people').

This looks like a rarity!

As I have said before at AK I used to get a mail order catalogue from The Radio People and as a teenager(waaaay in the mists of time...) I used to drool over all the desirable gear I could never afford to buy. Sniff Sniff Tears...

I was thinking it might have been the Brociner Lowther speaker, but having looked more carefully, I think it may be a squatter implementation of the full range Lowther horn. I don't think Hegeman was involved in that, but I'm guessing at every point here.

Lucky you. Even the Lowther PM 6 in Acousta cabinets is a surprising speaker, so I wonder how great these are.

Just picked it up at the horn and top section of the beast of a speaker and when I arrived the owner found the original Lowther PM4 green backed driver with square front in the original wood box . Driver cover and the owners name written with the port of entry info -. Flew airfreight to LAX . Uncovering the history is pretty frigging cool

My buddy and I went over to pickup the lower unit today . It alone weights a hefty sum of 200 lbs , The plaster horn’s weight is about 40 lbs .
We found the original wood shipping crate that was shipped from England to Singapore and marked up for shipping to Washington State. The box contained newspapers from 1965 ? Inside the packing create was a Cardboard liner stamped with the weight 40 lbs , country of origin England , Marked up destination Singapore . Found a old Genalex KT66 box too . All great info and fun uncovering the details ... I decided to restore this unit and lowther PM4 speaker. I’ll start a new threat when we start the restoration, sadly on the base there is a bit of water damage

Pretty nice ! Thanks for posting . The box I have the writing is very faded, I have not looked real hard . The one good thing is the black cloth cover and cone are in great shape , with the writing on the cone in pencil still visible. Thanks !

More pictures, please. The idea of shaped plaster for a horn area is just awesome,
even if it has gotten fragile all these years later!

Well, I guess it's about time for an update, truth be told, I finished the restoration of this speaker about 6 months ago and have been enjoying it too much to write an update, my sincere apologies.



As you can see, this LHMR will be at home with other horn systems and due to the careful packaging it arrived intact. One small mishap where the horn had a piece broken off while preparing for shipment but honestly very thankful an appreciative it arrived intact.. Here one can see the original driver
I used craters and freigthers which cost a small fortune, but it was worth it. As with all things, this project would have to wait for the one before it to be finished. Upon opening the crate the beautiful Nara wood was visable
