Today a customer bought a modern AV amp for his LR and gave me a couple units from his woodshop to have and enjoy.

one is a 5.1 sony in protection (I will gut it for the heat sinks) the other is a early 2220 that did work, status unknown.

he owns a wood cabinet shop so it is full of the dust that happens. and for some reason they wrote all over the face plate? wth??

I found the SM on hifi and it seems re-doable, but I wonder if it is worth it...just part her out? I will try and snap a pic in a day or so...

Love the 2220. If the faceplate looks beyond repair, check out the auction site. There is one on there right now for under $50.

Honest to gosh, This would be a hose down unit for me. I was skeptical when rBuckner described opening up the unit, hosing it down, scrubbing with Windex and blowing with compressed air. I did it on a filthy 2245 and it worked great. The only thing I didn't soak was the meter area. After blowing with compressed air, I used that moment to Deoxit all of the pots and switches. Let it dry for a couple of hot days and it worked great. If it isn't hot, you just need a few more days of drying. Here is my thread on that 2245.

Agree on the hose down, I had to do that to a Yamaha - I did cover a couple of sensitive areas, but it came out fine.

ya, I'd be cleaning and re-furbing that 2220.

Thanks for the advise, Steve. It may come to that, but I'll try conventional methods first. Story is it was only used for a couple of years, the set inside the shop. I believe it also has ash from Mt St Helens inside. Visual inspection-all original untouched. Will try to get to it today.
Will post pics. Thanks, Steve

And, yes quaddriver, refurb. As Steven said, it is a terrific unit. There's always the satisfaction of success. Remember, when the WAF goes bad, there's always the garage.
