Luxman arrived damaged, Poor packing...

I did contact the seller before the sale and I was told he was packing it as I instructed, Platter off with counter weight. The damage is repairable and the price was right. Some sellers do not want to spend any money on packing and shipping. I do what ever it takes to make sure the item arrives safely.

Your an audio guy and you understand how delicate turntables are. Certain sellers on that auction site take the money and run. I've been lucky of the tables i bought on ebay they all have arrived as stated except the second 1800MKII and it was damaged before i bought it and seller made good. It's weird in that the table I'm using now is part of that 1800MKII that was damaged.

this is the biggest joke ever, like all other retail establishments it is mostly (especially in the one I live near) its usually some 20 somthing working there, just someone hired off the street like any other clerk. they know about as much or even less about packing things like any other random person you would meet. I always chuckle when I read an auction that says "will be professionally packed by UPS" thats a seller basicly saying "you can guarantee your item will be broken in shipping." UPS was meant to handle packages, not pack them.
 
I always pack gear I ship so that it can take long 'throws', literally! I expect the shippers to treat the items as garbage. My 2nd (my mos challenging is beyond the scope here) most challenging pack job was a near mint Empire 589II. I removed the platter and tone arm assembly, and packed them firmly in separate boxes. I placed the actual TT in a tightly packed box. I packed all the stuff in one large box tighly packed with bubble wrap and foam sheets, with about 5-6" of cushioning between the large box and smaller boxes within. You could literally throw it 10' against a wall, and have no chance of damaging the contents.

The least UPS could do is use those two part foam expanding bags that conform to the shape of the shipped item - being a 'professional' shipping service and all......

When I get stuff, especially a TT shipped to me, I make great effort to communicate to the seller how to pack the item safely - and to ONLY send it if he conforms. I'll even offer them some extra dollars to do it right if they complain - just to make sure my items get to me safely.

I had one idiot send me a mint condition McIntosh amplifier, just sitting in a box, with no cushions or pads, sitting loosely in the box! UPS delivery. UPS was supposed to get a signature to deliver it and just left it on my porch(!!!). Against all odds, it arrived perfect with no damage. THAT was a miracle. :)

Yikes...I just got confirmation that my latest audio purchase was dropped off at my house today. I am at work. All I can picture right now is a mashed box waiting by my front door. Hopefully I'm wrong...

With the conveyor belts higher than 10 feet, passing this test may not be enough in some instances. But it does sound like you are doing the right thing to ship gear.

I wonder how much more potential there is for damage than back when the gear was new. How much higher is the potential drop compared with 30 years ago? Meaning of course, does original packaging in perfect condition for a vintage piece provide adequate protection today?

If the item that is being shipped is very heavy, it needs MORE protection and a BIGGER box and padding.

To be honest, the best way to pack a turntable is double box it. Make sure that the first box its in that its secure and bubble wrapped to the extent that when you look at it, you dont know what it is. Then what you actually do is make sure its secure in the second box, and doesnt move around. Use styrofoam pieces to make it snug. Ive shipped a couple of turntables, and never had a problem.


By the way John, thats a very nice Luxman turntable.
