Luxman L vs A series

Hello all,

New guy here, just posted an intro in the "introduce yourself" forum. I'm putting together a system for a second home and I'm really trying to recreate a specific tone or sound, I call it detailed but smooth, not overly analytical nor too warbly. To start with I picked up an old Denon SACD player the 1510AE. Sounded really good in the shop haven't hooked it up at home because I've still nothing to connect it to! Hence this question: any Luxman fans out there? Same place I got the SACD player has a fair selection of both L and A series Luxmans from the late 80's early 90's. What's the difference though, can anyone enlighten perhaps? Is it topology? Class A / D or something? I can find reviews and specs about individual members of either series but nothing on the difference between the series. Except that A seemed to have been rather short-lived and of course they are still using L. One guess is that A stands for Alpine from when they owned Luxman but this is not confirmed. Looking forward to learning from you all and have a great weekend!

Welcome....Big Luxman fan as I own 70's and 80's gear...The C02/M02 "Pre-Alpine"...The R-115 and R-117 (R-117 Top 3 80's receiver ). The 70's (L, M , T, R-1040, 1050, 1070, Luxman Laboratory Reference Series 5 series). The L, M, C, R-10xx line will require Recap/Restore as Heat in Luxman's Class A gear will Toast the boards. What is your Budget? What speakers are you using?

Help me, I've never had Luxman, I love integrated, what do you recommend for Klispchorn? L-10 I searched but can't find, one like L-10?

Aiuta me, non ho mai avuto Luxman, amo gli integrati, cosa mi consigli per le Klispchorn? L-10 ho cercato ma non trovo, uno come L-10?

but that L-10 is a great integrated amp.
Luxman made a number of integrated amps and with K-horns you can really chose just about any of them as that speaker doesn't need hundreds of watts.

Thanks my friend, I can't find L-10... meanwhile can you tell me which Luxman sounds as good as L-10? Although he has less Watts but approaching the sound of L-10 please. Sorry for my English.

Grazie amico mio, non riesco a trovare L-10 ... intanto puoi dirmi quale Luxman suona bene come L-10? Anche se ha meno Watts ma che si avvicina al suono di L-10 per piacere.

We've all done it. Fortunately your post has a nice list of Luxman gear useful on its own. A worthy addition to this thread that is getting more views, now. But you were answering pasgal and he can see the list and maybe find a nice amp. The thread is alive again. Just the op isn't going to be involved, probably.

The 5L15 (80 wpc) is from the Laboratory Reference Series line, the top units at the time
The L-10 (55 wpc) is from the line just below that, the Laboratory Standard Series which also includes the L-11 (100 wpc) a more powerful amp.
These are some of the best they offered back then.

The list provided by gslikker shows a lot of integrated amps. Many have the good Luxman sound and they vary in price, power and features. Problem with the list is you don't know the overall quality of the units. Most are good units but the LRS and LSS series are units made before the years of making things cheaper.

If you go to Hans' Luxman site where that list came from you can review some of the details on some amps. Most get a nice recommendation for sound quality. Here is the page with particulars on different amps whether they are integrated or preamp/power amps.

Se andate sul sito Luxman di Hans da cui proviene l'elenco potete rivedere alcuni dettagli su alcuni amplificatori. La maggior parte riceve una buona raccomandazione per la qualità del suono. Ecco la pagina con i dettagli sui diversi amplificatori siano essi integrati o preamplificatori/finali.

This one is a step down from the other two series mentioned above, this a Studio Standard Series and a smaller one. It will still have the Luxman Sound but not as good as the others, but way cheaper and more plentiful. It will be more than enough for the Klipsch.

The market varies for used Luxman products and one, bought at a nice price will allow you to have the Luxman sound and give you an oppotunity to upgrade when you find the LRS or LSS amps mentioned above.

This one also seems to be amenable to upgrading and getting more from the amp, if you are so inclined.

One issue is the bottom connections and long RCA plugs will not work with this unit unless it is lifted above the shelf. Odd but it puts those connections right on the board instead of needing wiring to get to them.

I don't like vumeters and the Laboratory Reference Series line seems have vmeters. I can't spend more than 500 euros :-(

I have to look for Laboratory Reference Series for a few watts, even 10 watts as long as it is minimalist in style, without a vmeter and under 500 euros.

Devo cercare Laboratory Reference Series da pochi watts, anche solo 10 watts basta che sia minimalista come stile, senza vmeter e sotto 500 euro.

I think the only Labratory reference series amp without meters is the later 5M20 power amp, which you probably won't find for under 500 Euros.

LSS is the L-10 and L-11 integrated amps and the M-12 stereo 80wpc and B-12 mono 150wpc amps no meters. Lucky to find these at 500€.

Luxman tried to voice their gear to sound good. I don't know if they sound similar to each other as I haven't tried them that way. But I'd just jump in where you can and enjoy as you look for the best at a great price.
 
Many thanks @Blue Shadow I found a L430 maybe I'll take this one, I hope it's a real Luxman sound, it would be my first Luxman.
