I recently picked up a nice Luxman PD 272. Nice looking tt and the tonearm is supposed to be excellent (a Micro Seiki TA-1).
When adjusting the speed control for 33 1/3 the control runs out of adjustment and is running too slow. When I switch it to 45 rpm's, I can dial it in exactly so I don't think the motor or a dirty bearing is the issue. I've cleaned the 33 speed control with no luck so far.
Suggestions?
Thanks in advance for the help.
Easy fix.
Mine started to speed drift after about 40 years
The speed control circuitry is very good with self checking to ensure consistency in the speed.
But any one of the 3 capacitors on the speed control PCB that age over time will cause the speed to drift.
I've attached a photo of the underside of the Luxman PD272 which shows the speed control PCB and the 3 capacitors circled in red that I replaced to correct this problem.
When this photo was taken a few days ago I had the tonearm out chasing down a hum that had mysteriously appeared in the right channel, so that's why it looks so bear underneath
The speed control PCB is held in position by 2 screws which enables it to be flipped over the remove the 3 capacitors that smooth out the current supply and solder in the new capacitors.
Hint, do not cut the pigtails on the capacitors, leave them long and fit an alligator clip on the pigtails as a heat sink while soldering with minimum heat so as not to fry the capacitors.
One capacitor has polarity, it's the solitary black one with a grey stripe up the side indicating negative polarity.
So, it's essential you take notice of the stripe on the side and install the new one exactly the same.
The other 2 capacitors (original ones grey - my new ones yellow) have no polarity so they can be installed any-which-way.
If you live long enough, you may have to replace them in another 40 years if they last as long as mine did
Good luck and happy listening
