Luxman R-1070 - can’t believe I scored one

Hello AK Gurus!

I scored a Luxman 1070 at an auction for $350, untested. They don’t show up that often, so I couldn’t pass it up. It arrived. All lights worked, pots, glass, all clean. Didn’t play last night and I went to bed doing some research. This morning I took the jumpers out of an HK 230 and whalla! I’m listening to it paired with my KLH Nines. I can even make out Eminem lyrics. Superb. Sublime.

As you can see from the pics, it’s in a large space. Along with the 1070, the Nine’s don’t pack the watts. I’m recapping my Klh 12’s for when I want to blow the roof off, but I can use some advice on an amp for when I really want to rock. I do have a B&K AVR507 in the cabinet but I’d like to stick with the Luxman for most listening and be able to blast it when I’m in the mood.

Any advice on the perfect pairing amp? I’m ready to sell everything (about 7 receivers and a dozen pairs of speakers) to build the ideal set up.

Many thanks, AKers. You are the best-

AW

Congrats!!, I owned one for awhile and it was quite robust at 75 per into 8Ω it went plenty loud so I'm not sure why you feel the need to add more amplification

How loud do you plan on listening when in the mood?

What do you mean by "Along with the 1070, the Nine’s don’t pack the watts" ?

I picked one up a few weeks ago at a local antique mall, some vendor had the Luxman R-1070, Carver C-1, and a Carver C-17. I scored all 3 for $315. There are still deals to be had out there, just gotta get out and grind! I sold the Carvers.

Just the Nines don’t play so loud - at least what I know about reading about them. Please correct me if I’m wrong. My barn is big and the 1070 does an okay job filling the space but I’d like to go bigger and cleaner (without pushing volume to the limits on the receiver.

I had a nice R-1120 I wished I had kept. Definitely had the smooth Luxman sound, though some folks actually prefer the 1070 over it. Could be a keeper depending on what else you have.

Though the Nines aren't power hungry, they will sound best with the right amp. Maybe search the speaker forum to see what other owners are using. My gut tells me a nice tube amp around 50wpc would be perfect. Perhaps a SS unit with adequate power supply? McIntosh or an upgraded Carver M_._t model?

Did you read Gordon Holt's review on the Nines? He had plenty of accolades for them. Lucky you when you find the right amp.

I didn't realize you're trying to accommodate a barn

I'd be more concerned about possible damage to the speakers.

The KLH 9's might not be the way to go, the Luxman (Rated at 75 per into 8Ω) should be more then enough for those speakers as they are very efficient.

I would do some research on Electrostatic speakers in general and the best use of them, I could be wrong but using them for when you're in the mood to "blast" you might be better served finding some speakers that accommodate a lot more wattage
