Luxman R-115 & ADS

I bought a R-115 and a pair of ADS L780/2's about a year and a half ago. Both are in mint condition and perfectly operational, except for lots of noise in the R-115's volume control. I eventually upgraded my system, and the receiver and speakers sat unused for several months.
Fairly recently, I decided to tackle that noisy VC with some FaderLube. As it turns out, the volume control on this receiver is completely removable (shaft nut and a couple screws) and is one of the easiest to clean as I've seen. It now works perfectly with zero noise. I set up the R-115 and the 780's in the garage and streamed some Amazon Unlimited. There it was; this combo has a wonderful synergy - clean, articulate but not harsh, revealing in a good way, amazing imaging, and a nice big soundstage. This is what got me back into audio / systems after a hiatus of a few years.
Over the weekend, I brought this receiver and speakers to a friend's house for some listening. It was set up in a much better space than my garage, where I typically use them, and we added an SVS SB12-NSD subwoofer. I've got to say that I was even more impressed - the better listening space and added deep bass made the combo even better. Next, we used a pair of ADS L1590's in place of the 780's. Needless to say, they sounded pretty amazing. This 70 watt receiver powered them to high levels while maintaining the same clarity I noticed at lower levels.
Last night, I connected an original Marantz 2035B to the 780's. It was decent, but I think the 2-way L520's sound better on the Marantz. I then went back to the R-115, and it wasn't even close; the magic was back! All this makes me wonder if the big brother R-117 would be a huge improvement. I'm curious how many use or have tried comparable Luxman power with similar ADS speakers. They almost seem made for each other! I'd def like to find a nice R-117 at some point. I'm mostly over receivers now, other than ones that have sentimental value to me, but I could def find a place for the big Luxman.

My reading indicate the R-115 is as nice sounding at the R-117. I have done ADS and Luxman but my combo was different 1590/2 with tube amps. The speakers had too much woofer for the 16 damping factor of the amps. Now have ss Luxman power but haven't done the ADS with it.

In the amp comparison I did, the Luxman tubes were first by a wide margin over other nice amps, all solid state and the speaker used was the ADS L710. Nice combo. Luxman really is a cut above or more.

Sounds like I'll be happy with the R-115 if its power is sufficient, though I'd still like an R-117! ;) I'd be curious as to your impressions of Luxman SS + ADS if you try that combo. It's hard to believe that this receiver is all original and has not been serviced; I can't imagine a better sounding source of power for the $100 I paid for it. I don't personally have 1590's, but I do have M12's. They sounded really nice on an ST-70, but fairly loud volumes with lots of bass revealed shortcomings. I now use Parasound SS for the woofers and the ST-70 for the mids/highs, and this works out really well. I'll keep my out for Lux tube equipment too, though I'm sure it'll be out of my range if new.

I have 1290/2s that I run with a parasound SS amp for the woofer and a diy tube amp for the tweeter/mids. This is the best I have found yet but would also love to try a better tube amp just to see if I'm missing anything;)

That's probably the closest to my setup that I've seen (other than mine!). How much power is your tube amp? I'm not sure how it compares to the ST-70, but mine sounds really nice powering the tweets and mids. It really is a nice combo.

I bought a R-115 ..... in mint condition and perfectly operational.... This 70 watt receiver

I love the R-115!!! and I have a pair of ADS L400's and when paired together they sounded great!!!! I also have a M-2000 power amp and I'm sure at some point I had it connected to the ADS. It was probably several years ago as the old gal is now just collecting dust.

I listen to music at reasonable levels and when using the Lux never have I felt that I could be doing better ala the R-117. I have had access for a couple of years now to a mint one in the original box with remote and could probably coerce my buddy to part with it for not that much money yet I've had no desire.

The 117 has developed a mystical following and along with that a pretty hefty price tag to boot. The 115 is an underrated gem (hopefully it stays that way).

I like that they both have remotes and pre-outs, I've used the R-115 as pre connected to the M-2000, very nice combination.

The question you need to ask yourself is do I really need MORE? from what I understand the 117 has a few more functions and 160 watts.

There's a good thread going on right now about how many watts does one REALLY need.

My tube amps are from about 1976 and have been modded to use the KT88/6550 from the NLA 8045G and a bit of repair. New Luxman is really top line gear. The new CL-1000 preamp that looks like the C-1000 from 75 is now a tube unit and sells for 19999.99 retail. All comments so far have been positive so I guess Luxman is back making most excellent sounding audio equipment.

And that is why I have sent you my address!! I have the C-1000/T-110 to make that M-2000 look great.

I have a R-113, love the thing. I've said it before on here, I think it's the best bottom of the line receiver ever made, and I've owned quite a few bottom of the line receivers. Try it with vinyl, great phono section. I tried quite a few different preamps with my Zenith 5G29 tube amp, wasn't real pleased with any of them. On a whim I tried the R-113, winner, winner, chicken dinner, it's still doing preamp duty to this day.

@David_NC I can't help you with the ADS/Luxman sound...but my R-117/JBL sound is great. So much so that I never really looked into any other equipment for over 30 years. I am keeping my eye out for a 115 for my office too to replace the current JBL 18Ti/Onkyo TXSV70PRO setup.

One caution that you're probably aware of is the speaker relays on these Luxmans. I had one melt down last summer when I was pushing it...blew the 250Ti woofer clear out of the magnet gap...but it survived after a refoam.

One question if you dont mind..when you cleaned the VC...how is the dial position determined? I ask because on the second 117 I bought the owner said a shop cleaned it and it does sound great..but the light on the lowest volume is at 9 o'clock not the normal 7 o'clock position. Is it a matter of just rotating the whole control or what?

Tell you what, I'll trade you a mint R-115 with a volume indicator that works properly for that second 117 so you don't have to mess with that pesky volume knob! ;)
Seriously, if you remove the cover, you'll find a wire coming from the volume knob that connects to the LED. Just make sure that when you pull off the volume knob that you don't damage this wire. I unplugged the one on mine so I'd not tear it, but that's likely optional. Knowing that, turn the volume control to the lowest / CCW and gently pull off the knob. You should be able to then align the red LED to correspond to the 7:00ish position for the lowest setting. Just push the knob back on. Initially, I thought I'd broken the wire, but then the amp came out of protection, and the LED came on... pretty cool!
As for the speaker relay... I'm curious if that's an issue with the 70 watt R-115 vs the 160 watt R-117. I'll check into that.

The 115 does have a nice phono section. We used it over the weekend as an integrated amp as well as a pre with tube power amps, and it performed nicely them, too.

Trade me a mint R-115 for a nice Onkyo TXSV70PRO you say..fantastic!!! :rflmao: So the knob is press fit only..good to know..thanks. I understand about the wire.

According to the SM for the 115 it only has one speaker relay for both A & B side...where the 117 has two for A and two for B. The 115's relay is also a different part number too so maybe your safe..I dont know..beyond my pay grade.

UPDATE: Ok I found out from another thread and some searching that the 115 has one 5A relay and the 117 has four 16A relays...so to me they really beefed up the 117 quite a bit to have a 16A relay for each channel. Here is the link FYI....

I can attest from personal knowledge that the R-115 has the same issue with the speaker relay, from what I've read and researched they are built pretty similar. I've seen threads with relay problems for the R-113 also

I think the Magic with the R series is in the preamp. Using a R-113 as a preamp with excellent results. Incredible sound. I think it tames very accurate speaker's with just the right amount of warmth.

Mine is a P-P EL34 that the builder claimed around 50w a side. I use a inline filter to cut parasound to the woofers off at 500hz. It can get unbearably loud in my 11 by 10 room.

Sounds like I may need to check into the speaker relay. Perhaps one beefier than a single 5 amp would be good, though it seems odd to cheap out on the 115’s relay.
One thing I’ve read is that the amps in these models have lots of reserve power for peaks. That’s probably one reason mine does so well with my inefficient 4 ohm speakers.

I primarily use my R-115 as a preamp for my Denon dual mono amp. But I have a pair of 4 ohm speakers connected to the R-115 for when I want to listen to different speakers. The R-115 has a very nice amplifier section too.
