Luxman R-117 Speaker Relay Access/Replacement

Thought I'd toss a few pictures up here as it's kinda hard to find a step-by-step of replacing the notoriously fail-prone speaker relays in the R-117.

PLEASE NOTE: I am not an expert in anything. Try this at your own risk. MAKE SURE YOU UNPLUG THE UNIT and leave it unplugged for, like, a fortnight or three to make sure all big capacitors are discharged. I exaggerate... but not by much. Be f'ing careful.

So, as you may well know, the three main things that typically go blech on a R-117 are, in order of likelihood of bleching:

1 - the speaker relays die
2 - the volume pot gets wonky
3 - the tone controls (subsonic filter, tone defeat) go bad

Lucky me, all 3 have come to pass on this unit. I was fortunate enough to have a tech fix the volume pot (had to bend a wiper, but now it works nicely) and I've got a TP-117 to bypass all the R-117 preamp stuff (upgrade anyways), and this weekend I decided to tackle issue #1, the relays.

I've thought about/tried to get into them before, but it seemed like a beast to access, so I stopped bothering after the pot got fixed. But lately it's just unavoidable. Even with the preamp, I was typically only getting one channel coming out of the R-117. So... here we go again.

The beast itself:

Take the case off - there's 3 screws on either side and 2 on the back - to access the interior:

Here in the back of the unit you can see the speaker board. There are six screws on the back holding the speaker posts to the back of the case; remove them.

You'll note the big honkin' transformer (silver thing) that weighs roughly as much as a neutron star. In order to actually get the board out, you need to remove it - or at least tilt it to the side. It's held in place by four screws, one at each corner. You also need to disconnect six cables, marked with red arrows, and clip two zip ties, marked with blue arrows:

Once those are all disconnected, and you've removed the four screws holding the transformer to the bottom of the case and the six holding the speaker PCB to the back, you can tilt the transformer (carefully) towards your left if you're facing the front of the unit, and lift it gently aside. This thing is heavy. It's like 80% the weight of the R-117 in general, so make sure you've got a good grip and then slide out the speaker board.

I STRONGLY suggest you set the transformer back in its place once the speaker board is out. I don't know where else you could put it or why, but just make sure you don't accidentally set or drop it on anything you don't intend to turn into a flour of some type.

You'll find four black boxes - the relays - soldered onto the board. Desolder the spots shown with white arrows below to remove them:

Once they're out, you'll be replacing them with NTE R22-5D16-24 relays, which you can find wherever. I got two from Amazon and a further three from Ebay (in case I screwed up something, which shockingly I did not).

Side-by-side comparison notes that the NTE has an extra pin - the Matsushitas have 4, the NTEs 5. Just break or cut off the extra one before putting it in.

Solder it in place, and you're good to reassemble. Lift up the transformer, pop the speaker board back into its spot (making sure that the side with the connectors is up), put the transformer back in its spot, screw it and the speaker board back into place, reconnect all six connectors, and close up the case. You should have a nicely functioning R-117 with fancy schmancy properly-working new speaker relays.

If you don't... please note my disclaimer, I'm not an expert in anything. This is just what worked for me. And worked bloody great, too.

A bit late to the party, but nice writeup and great looking stack!

For anyone changing relays and reading this in the future, if you go with the R22-1D16-24 NTE relays, they have 4 pins and the same type (SPST) as the original Matsushita relays. It's just a relay, so I don't think the other part will work or perform any different, other than having to clip the pin.
 
So want happened to the speaker posts? Aren’t they connected to the relay board with those flat plates (bars)? Do they just separate from the board when you take the board out? Did not see the speaker posts in this pic. I know this has been a while back.

The speaker posts are still attached to the board. You can't see them from this angle. They are under the board in this picture.

Finally got the notice from Digikey about the part availability, order the exact Omron G2RL-1A4-E-DC24 but seems like Omron G2RL-1A4-DC24 is the one required no snipping? The question is still can I use the ones received and just snipping the 2 legs off? Please confirm, thx.

I followed the instructions on this thread but used NTE R22-1D16-24 . The original thread says to use NTE R22-5D16-24 relay. The main differences that i can spot are that the 5D has an extraneous pin as described in thread and is SPST as opposed to SPST−NO. In any case the amp leds are off as is the volume knob no sound. Wanted to check here and ask if anyone has had real world success w the NTE R22-1D16-24? Hoping I made a compatibility mistake. Please and thank you.

Apologies if this is a silly question, but assuming you waited for the 10-20 second delay for the relay to click, and the LEDs light up? (guessing my r-117 takes about 8-10 seconds and maybe 10-15 seconds or so for the r-115). Also, assuming that everything is connected, in order? I know my unit would not start until all boards/peripherals connected. ps.. also, make sure one of the speaker a or speaker b switches are engaged, as appropriate.

By the way DCH, meant to say thank you for this step by step.

Just refreshed another 117 with 4 of the NTE R22-1D16-24 and double confirming they work for 117s for anyone looking at this in the future.

One tip, if you're not desoldering the speaker posts is to place all the relays in place before soldering, so that you don't end up blocking your access. Or, at least do the relays on the circuit board end first, so that you don't block their insertion from the other end. (circuit board is in the way to remove them from that side.)
 
Finally take apart the speaker terminal PCB and saw these 4 aqua blue color electrolytic capacitors and thinking might just replace them. They are C651, 652, C655. 47uf/16v. C654 0.47uf/50v. Do they need to be anything special? Or UPW, Panasonic FC will do? Any suggestion? Thanks.
As far as the relays, will be using G2RL-1A4-E DC24, SPST, 16A recommended here.

Took the first 2 relays off and just realize they are different in size. New ones are just fall the size. And not only I need to snip off 2 pins also the pin positions are slightly off. Does this look right to you guys? Can I still use them bending the pins slightly to fit? Or should I get the better fit ones?

Old thread, I know, but I was wondering if anyone had to change the relay on the backup power board?

I am having a pop at turn on and was wondering if this may be causing it.

If not, does anyone know what might be causing it. My DC offset is quite low.

Also, I never get the "pop" if I turn it on without the speakers switch engaged, then engage it after. It's driving me nuts.
