Luxman R-3055 Repair Question

I'm fixing up a cosmetically challenged Luxman R-3055 that I got for free from my parents. It's a receiver I'm going to use to teach myself some restoration skills. I've got it working (only some grime, fuses and loose wires), but without using loudness the signal significantly lacks bass and treble presence. With loudness, it sounds acceptable. Very warm, full-bodied signal with the EQ curve we would all expect. With a late 80's 100wpc Yamaha AV receiver, the speakers sound similar to the luxman with loudness engaged.

For some context, it looked like something had spilt into the receiver, created a short, and the protection blew. There's a board (the one with the tuner) that appeared to have dried up fluid on it. Examining it more closely, the solder joints are somewhat corroded. Could this be my problem? Could it just be the sound of the receiver? Should I resolder the electronics that are there or replace them?

The 3055 should be an excellent sounding unit. I suspect there are problems in the unit. Good luck with it.
 
I have a 3055 that I acquired a few weeks ago and cosmetically it is mint. After a bit of work and cleaning, it powered right up. The bias adjusted spot on and the dc offset was good. Now two weeks into the restoration it’s stable and sounds fantastic. For a 40+ year old receiver it’s more than amazing. The build quality is quite good. There are 75 electrolytic capacitors in this unit and I am replacing with mundorf for the main power filter, elna silmic II, nichicon fine gold and nichicon muse for the bipolars. The originals are all rubycons which have held up surprisingly well except for about 6 which were leaking a white goo which I think was glue and a couple dark brown which was clearly electrolytic. The two filter caps tested well, but upon removal, one had clearly leaked and was badly corroded.

All the smaller bipolars in the pb 1207 were all failed open with zero esr. All the capacitors visually looked clean except for 1. So the rubycons clearly have a long life. The failed 10000 uf power caps looked good on the meter and visually, but I had to remove them to see the leakage and corrosion on C353.

The volume / balance was a bit wonky with the left channel dropping out and then the right but after cleaning 3 times with just contact cleaner and not deoxit plus replacing the bad caps that went away. The on off switch was crackling (probably arching) on startup but haven’t turned it on since replacing the filter caps which may have been causing that?

The left and right front panel lamps were burned out but I found drop in LEDs as replacements.

The only evidence of service was a sticker from 1987 which tells me they were well built and designed. Quite rare and in my view well worth fully restoring. The main board is quite big and some of the solder point are very small and traces pretty close so it takes magnification and lots of patience and a number are so tight I don’t even want to attempt- that is after quite a bit of back and forth to accurately locate which is very time consuming.

I ordered all the high quality parts for about $125 from mouser, digikey and partsconnexion plus the LEDs from an AKr. Hopefully the switch sorts out after replacing the failed power filter caps. I am going to take it as far as I can and if that doesn’t do it, will look for a professional restoration for the last 1%.
