Super Member
I just picked up a luxman r 404.
It has no right channel audio but somehow doesn't blow fuses. Can someone point me to what could be worng.
Also what is the power amp chip in this - there is a big Toshiba IC tc something or other with like 36 pins 18 on either side. Is that power amp IC ?
Thanks.

That big chip is some other function. Probably AM/FM. The outputs are those large transistors that are attached to that weird "tube" thing. Two are gray and two are green-ish.

Artie - Good to know, thanks I will check those tonight.

Ruxman: Cleaning it I am afraid is a multi year process. This one has lots and lots of what looks like pine seeds and 2 big holes in the top ... I tipped it out to get most of em out, surprised it didn't blow a fuse actually, so for $6 I figured I was ahead of the game.

Cool.

K more cleaning later, I found 1 blown fuse, and some water or dirt may have caused a smoke out following which it blew another fuse.
After all this, this receiver still has the 1 missing channel and good on the other.

I will have to get fuses now, these little ones I dont have.
Cool.

No dbt.

No dbt, but the thing was plugged in several times in the recent past and run, the cheerios and pine seeds in it not withstanding.

I may have dripped sweat onto a spot where it smoked. I am very careful but I do sweat a lot and today was 99 degrees @ 6 pm here and was very humid.

Thanks.

Today in Monterey, it was overcast until about 1pm, then it got to a blazing 75°F. I love living here~

Of course it is great weather in CA, and you're by the coast as well ...
Here is what I moved to in 2002 - 6 mile commute to work, and you can run near speed limit on almost all roads and a princely sum of 150K bought me a 2725 sqft house on near 1/4 acre brand new.
Pre housing bubble you say ... well @ the peak in 05 my neighbor sold his 3200 sqft house for $192k. That house originally cost 168K.
CA also has very predictable weather, No rain between april and oct. Not so in east coast. It doesn't rain that much, but its spread anywhere any time. Makes for an interesting life as a hardcore biker. Yet teh house made up for it.
Cool.

Cleaned it.

OK its clean as it can get. No worries about smoke or anything else from it now.

OK so it blows the fuse on the left edge of the board - just to the left of the heat sink that is mounted there perpendiculat to that copper tube thing that looks like a condom. It also blows the fuse on the right side of the heat sink - its under that cluster of wires in the pic.

So - shorted output ? is the output transistor still available these days ?
Thanks.
Srinath.

That is the next thing I'd be doing. One massive order for mouser electronics is comming up, doa rear chip on the yamaha, a nad 7140 which also blows the main fuse @ power up (shorted output's is my thought there too), a good many more.
Cool.
