Luxman TA-1 Tonearm help

I have a Thorens TD160 Turntable with a Luxman TA1 Tonearm that I was told was designed by Micro Seiki.

I recently took the tonearm apart to replace the wire and noticed this metal bridge inside the tube of the tonearm.

Can anyone identify what this is and what it's purpose is?

Any help at all would be much appreciated.

Might be to damp the tube, or to keep the wires from vibrating inside the tube.
