Luxman value counsel needed??

I love the Luxman L-450, 480, 580 series.

I own the 450 and the 480.

For me the Holy Grail of this series is the 580 - I never thought I might have a chance at owning one.

But I have access to one - as close to new looking as possible / functions flawlessly and has been re-capped as needed.

It is from a Luxman collector who values and looks after his gear with great respect and care.

What do you think a fair value is? Most of you are likely reading this from the US so if you are responding as a Canadian please say so - dollar difference and all!

I will assume most of the responses are Americans and thus in US currency.

Thank-you for your assistance.

tough competition from other luxmans of the era in the 100wpc range.

the L100/L110/L11 would all be my choice, but then I own an L-580 and it was a workhorse for the years I used it. Great amp, sounds good but the others are better built and for the first two the cabinet is real wood. But doesn't that rosewood vinyl Luxman uses look great?

One non-operational unit just sold for USD255 on the bay. classic audio sold one with an asking price of USD549 at some point in time and they get the money. All that said I would think one is a fair value at USD450 plus any extras, box, packing material, owners manual and such. Above that and I might look for something else but if you are collecting you could go a bit more.

This amp is unusual as the components are on the underside of the main board. There are a couple TO-220 transistors on this board that get the circuit board too hot. If this one does not have heat damage, it would be a great amp. If it is heat affected, hopefully it isn't bad.

But would I rather have this or some of the other brand 100 watter, of course. But that doesn't mean this one would be worth more than what some of those amps might sell for. Some brands have a higher name premium than Luxman.

Thanks Blue Shadow!

My decision comes down to whether I think for the $$$ difference I am getting any further ahead with the 580 verses the 450 - I don't mean power because that's obvious. I mean in sonic quality. And not having heard a 580 I really don't know the answer to that.

I love the 450 and the 480 that I have. They both run the systems they are in handily.
And I love the way they sound!

Having the bigger brother I suppose is just that - having it!

someone has all of them and I believe I have read that he likes the 580 best. Been a while since I have read about this difference but I'm sure it is in the past posts somewhere. Google should find it.

One in that condition is easily worth $500 to me. It would be a keeper.

I have wanted one for a long time now, but am very choosy. I'd drop $500 very quickly on a perfect one and then it would stay with me forever. You could wait around forever looking for one at a better price, but it likely won't be as nice or as well cared for. Splurge!
