MA 6100 Volume Issue

Hello and Happy Thanksgiving! My dads McIntosh MA6100 is having issues with the volume control- it is only outputting high volume, (won't go lower or higher) and in certain devices there is a delay in shutting off. Is this something I can repair on my own, or recommended to send for service? Thanks!

Hello & Welcome to AK!

If you go to the HOME page, look on the right side at the list of AK sponsors, and click on DeWick Repairs, it will take you to Terry DeWick's web site. You haven't mentioned where you live, but Terry is in Knoxville, TN. He is probably the best one to work on your Dad's McIntosh, but right now he has at least a 90 day backlog. E-mail him and see if he can help you.

Good Luck - - -

Also, your volume pot is bad most likely, a not too rare occurrence with MA 6100 and MAC 1900 receivers, there is a replacement pot available from McIntosh or Audio Classics. And yes, Terry DeWick is recommended for servicing.

Wow Kent,

There is a replacement? I had heard the the volume control was unoptainium. I hope you are right!

Mac was plagued with some bad controls during that period of time, and we replaced all of them for units we sold. As others have said Ryan at Audio Classics and Terry Dewick will have the current best answers for you. It might be as easy as a simple cleaning or might require replacement and there could always be other hidden issues. Your issue is one of the reasons I updated from a C-28 to a C-29. That all said you might want to have the unit refurbished if needed. Then it will be like new and ready for another 40 years of great music reproduction.
