MA5100 Resurrected

New owner, new poster.

About 6 months ago, I picked up a dead unit from a specialty audio store that was going out of business. I handed it over to a tech who promised they would work closely with another experienced tech to recap it and bring it back to life. That exercise went sideways and I wound up sending it to another tech locally here in Austin. I'm happy to say she is up and running, even if she isn't very pretty.

It was never my intent to make a big investment in this unit. Since I had never owned Mac before, I was curious about the hype and mythos. So, when the "boat anchor" fell into my lap for $150; I made the investment. Repairs to date have cost me ~$450. I know addressing cosmetics will run much more, so they are not an immediate priority.

Excepting...knobs. It is a royal PITA to change inputs at this point - a pair of pliers have been pressed into service at the moment.

Mac responded to my parts inquiry almost immediately. No great surprise - they say they are unobtanium. What options do I have in the short term - beyond pliers?

I will eventually be looking for feet and some missing screws. The glass faceplate and cabinet can wait for days when I'm a bit more flush.

Serial 59H33. Etched 05383 on frame.

Not much option for the knobs.

I have seen some knobs on that auction site. Not cheap though. There might be other dealers who have such.

Yes, same here.

I should have used the handy "search" feature before posting. Kudos to the mod for not beating me about the head for being lazy.

This thread will likely also be useful for me:

Now I just need to figure out how to upload pictures (I know - go read the stickies!!!)

A kind public thank you to our friendly mod who graciously sent me two knobs to get me started. Much appreciated!

During use, the unit has an intermittent hum - sometimes with input selection, sometimes powering on - that can be remedied with a power cycle. But I will deliver it back to the technicians for a second look this weekend. Otherwise, I've enjoyed the time I've had with the unit to date.

Best
