someone on this site was wondering if $300 for a 1900 in good shape was reasonable. I am not able to find that thread. There are lots of things I cannot find, but do not worry about because those things find me some how. So what? The 1900 would be a great deal. I have one now. New caps, new output transistors. All from McIntosh- oem part. Sounds great. Nice, but how long before a repair is needed again?

The Mac 1900 was my first piece of high quality, non mass market audio gear. In ten years of ownership I had to replace the caps twice, had numerous other single channel related failures, and the tuner was always drifting out of adjustment. It sounded good with higher sensitivity speakers, but the joke became the same as owning a Jaguar, its great when it runs. YMMV.
When I got the bill for the third major overhaul I traded it for a Denon cartridge, and never regretted it. The biggest issue with Mac gear is the culture that surrounds it, I had no idea how good other lesser known brands sounded because I had Mac blinders on. Once freed from them I started to search out great gear and found lots of high quality separate components that were more appropriate for my speakers and could be swapped out when I wanted a change, that's the real fun of this hobby in my opinion. And also the danger.

sparks, your right on there bro. I have a mac mc7150 amp and a mx113 pre, I just got the 113 back from a total resto and now fixin to send in the amp. I also have both pioneer sx 12"s, and both 10"s, all have been gone thru. I cant wait to see if the mac stuff is that much better if better at all, I do know these monster pioneer"s kick some ass when hooked to heritage......Roost

So, you got a lemon 1900 and have surmised that all McIntosh gear, generally speaking, is the same. That's a wee bit short sighted don't you think? I've owned a few 1900s that were absolutely original and each performed perfectly.
As I type, I'm listening to a MC2105 that is absolutely original in every way, save the new glass faceplate that I replaced. If only cars were as reliable . . .
