Mac 4100 preamp out with MC275 CE?

Greetings!

Last two days I have some time to tinker with the preamp setup for my MC275 CE. And since I have my Mac 4100 & 1900 receivers sitting around in the bedrooms under utilized, I have decided to connect these preamp outputs to the MC275 CE and listen if there would be any sonic improvement/difference over the vintage MX-110 I have.

Perhaps, it's my less-than-optimal vintage Klipsch speakers (or my aging personal listening devices), I thought the MX-110 sounds just as quiet, or almost identical to the Mac 4100 output from the MC 275 CE. I have only done this with a CD source but not the phono on the different preamps. Has anyone else ever tried something likes this before? Any thoughts or comment before I start going down the path for a more modern C22 or its C2200 sibling?

Cheers,
Antonio

I haven't compared the specs of the MX 110 and those of the preamp section of the MAC 4100 but being ~ 20 years newer, I wouldn't be surprised if the MAC compared favorably. However, things quickly get into that whole tubes vs SS debate for which there is no answer in the absolute as hearing is all subjective, and as you mention - your speakers and/or ears may or may not be able to "resolve" the differences between the two.

Personally I can see nothing wrong about using the MAC as a tuner/preamp - and keep both units around as a stand-in whenever one or the other needs serviced. I kept an '80s receiver about for such a purpose - utilizing the preamp or power amp sections of it as necessary. Alas, my MAC 1500 does not have preamp out/main in provisions. :(
