My ears are bleeding
Finally put the Two's into service after replacing the surrounds on the mids. For music the jury is out, need more time, though honestly they're otherwise original (all new surrounds only), which means xover's are still factory. However, with HT wow. One of the Blu-rays that was giving me issues was "9", no it's not a prequal to "10", it's an animated movie that has some pretty serious bottom end especially in the first few minutes of the movie.
Anyway, I had a pair of JBL L3's in "rotation" and they performed rather well. These were uprooted later by RTR G-200's, also very nice performers. Both had unseated my Mach One's, but only because the Mach One's were overshadowing the rears so surround wasn't really surround. Unfortunately neither the RTR's or the JBL's could handle the bottom end, both had woofer's bottoming out, and with the volume at a reasonable level.
Step in the Two's. I wasn't expecting anything, just hoping as I once had a pair of Two's, but that's a lengthy story I'll save for another time. These latest set were given to me by a friend with both woofers and mids in need of new surrounds. Moving on, I listened to them briefly with FM and while they sounded good they weren't keeping up in the high end with the RTR's. But when I popped "9" in, wholy smokes. No bottoming out to speak of, and best of all, the surround was better than I had experienced ever. Very balanced and open with smooth transitions when sound panned. But best of all bottom end that was clearly floor pounding without any boominess to speak of. No bottoming out, no stress with demanding dynamics.
I can only hope that recaps will make them even better still. It's nice, however, for a change to be able to crank it up and NOT be overwhelmed by the high end, as with the other speakers. It was harsh and difficult to listen at theater levels, till now. After doing caps I'll have to see how they do with music, if not much better I have other speakers that can be used for music and the Two's will serve HT duty exclusively. Watching "Cream live Albert Hall", but with the RTR's and Two's going, too cool.
