Hello All,

I just got my new MC352 and C45. I am now looking to add a CD/DVD player to my system and I am currently looking at a used MVP861.

In order to get the MVP861 I really need to strech my wallet. How much better sound will I get from the 861 against players from Yamaha, Maranatz or other brand in the <$500 range.

Should I buy a cheap CD/DVD player now and wait a while for the 861 or maybe even a 871 ?

Juan I had a $400 Harmon Kardin cd player before and thought it was fine until I hooked my MVP-861 up. The base was much better as the MVP- 861 has a base management system depending on your speaker size. The other thing that I noticed right away was the imaging was better, my system sounded bigger more three dimensional. Lastly, the MVP-861 plays SACD, DVD audio both of which have disks available in surround sound and multi channel formats. Oh yeah did I mention it plays regular DVD, CDr, CDrw,DVD+, DVD-, Divx as well although I have never used mine for movies yet. The MVP-861 is in my 2 channel system, I purchased it new for this purpose over a MCD 201 because of the reasons above as they were both about the same price when I picked mine up.

If you don't need a SACD player the MVP851 is a great CD/DVD player which will be closer to your price range.

What is your priority, 2 channel music, surround music, movies? How would you weight these priorities? This greatly impacts the choice.

Everyone is correct, the MVP861 is a universal player (except for blue ray and HD) The audio portion of that unit is what you would expect from a McIntosh piece. Smooth, dynamic, beautiful! To determine what model you would want depend on your listening habits.
