Magnavox 185 6V6 restoration

I've never restored a tube amp, or owned one until recently. I know very little about how to do it.

The first thing I want to do is recap it, but I don't know how to find a list of the capacitors I need. I could try looking at each capacitor to see if there's any useful info printed on it.

Does anyone know where I could find a capacitor list for this particular amp?

Capacitance and voltage ratings should be printed on the caps and cap cans. A check of the Net may find a schematic. That will be useful.

What you find in the amp is more accurate than a factory parts list because they changed components over the years and your may not be as drawn on the schematic.

Also take note of the polarity of electrolytics. Sometimes the screening on the board is wrong. This comes from my own mistakes over the years.

Hey Eric and welcome aboard

What is your proficiency level working with voltages, readings, testing and soldering? the reason I ask is that is a nice amp and depending on your answer probably not one you want to start with.

Also if you want to take control of the situation and learn as much as possible before you start AK has a great search function (upper right hand corner of the page) and seeing as the Magnavox Amp-185 is and has been very popular around here there are a myriad of restoration threads that you should read up on plus you'll find Schematics and more then likely a list of caps

Those things are so easy. There are only a small handful of capacitors that should probably be replaced. Only four coupling capacitors on each 6V6 tube socket, and the can capacitor (silver cylinder on top next to power transformer) which usually houses 3 or 4 individual capacitors inside one can. You will see the capacitor info engraved on the side of the can itself. You will see something like: 40uF @ 450 Volts with a square, triangle, or half moon symbol next to it.
