magnavox 185 amp phono input is cool...

I have been working on this amp a bit with the help of a some good people on this forum. I added RCA jacks to the input of the phase inverters but, left the phono input intact. I did make the input of the phono match the phase inverter with its 47k/470k network at the input. I've been running my phone through the amp using Amazon music and I've noticed a couple things. I'm a child of the 80's so I grew up listening to 80's metal an hair bands. I also like classic rock and some soft rock stuff to in my later years. Anyways, I've noticed that the hair band/ metal stuff sounds better through the phono input because of the added bass. If anyone has this amp and likes that kind of music make sure to check it out before ripping it out. I might need to adjust the .005 coupling cap to reduce the bass a bit but other than that is cool as hell. Now, the other inputs at the phase inverter are great for stuff like classical, jazz, soft rock, blues type stuff. Check out Joss Stone This Ain't Love or Steely Dan's song Jack Of Speed through these inputs. Really natural sounding...

now you will have more gain through the phono input but it sounds great at a lower volume. plenty loud enough for this cat.

HA,,, A convert!!! did ya try it with its 4R speakers yet? Its always good to try something first before you
re-engineer it... Magnavox had good designers way back in the 50s!!!!

I have the original 15” speakers but nothing to put them in. Been keeping my eyes open for speaker cabs but no luck lately. It’s not bad with an 8 ohm load but I k ow it would be different with it’s interested impedance load.
I have a little el84 se stereo amp the I was running on an 8 ohm load and it’s like the Magnavox Amps and ran on a 4 ohm load. I ordered replacement output transformers and it made a big difference in the tone of the amp. It had less bass with the matched impedance which was nice. More detail in general...
 
Do you have the mids and tweeters also? they are in open back cabs,,, so building boxes would be easy...
 
I have the horns and some other speakers. I’ve parted out a couple of the push pull console unites. I have 1 with el84’s and one with 6v6’s. The el84 is a 175 if I’m thinking right because it came with a radio and the 6v6 is the 185.
 
Don’t have the cash to build cabs right now. Plus it winter and I don’t have a heated garage. Bummer ...
 
I also think the phase inverter inputs sound better with no capacitor at the inputs. Just the 47k/470k network and that’s it.
