Magnavox 6V6 Stereo Console...I am impressed...makes La Scalas sound alive

Picked up this stereo console a few weeks back. From what previous owner told me it seems to have been in continual use since it’s heyday back in ‘59.
This console has provisions for external speakers which I am currently using and I really am surprised by the sound of this amp.

I used to think that my La Scalas just suffered from LBD(low bass disease) but I’ve changed my mind after listening to this amp. I’m listening to jazz right now (joe Williams) and the ‘woodiness’ of the bass comes through a lot better then my other setups. I was listening to bass-laden music the other day and it performed just as well. It’s tight and quick.

Does anyone else have this Maggie? Or a similar one? What have you done with it and what’s really your impressions?

Looks to me like you have a 6BQ5 not a 6V6 amp. Probably a 93XX amp which is very well though of. Dave Gillespie has done a great deal of work evaluating and modifying this type of Magnavox amp. I have one of these and it is very nice as a stand-alone 12-14 watt push-pull stereo amp.

Many of us around here own at least one or more of these Magnavox console amps. I own the AMP175 which has many variations.

I believe that yours is a 9300 series. It should be stamped on the side of the chassis somewhere.

9302-00 i was confusing it with my Maggie consolette. What speakers do you like to use with it?

I think what you are hearing is the extreme bass boost Magnavox used in their consoles.

I'd look to see if that wire bundle has slipped out of a tie or clip and get it away from those tubes if it touching them. I melted a meter probe on mine once by accident. Hot stuff there if it's too close.

Thanks for the heads up. Some wires had come loose from a clip so I moved them out of the way so they don’t melt

I was wondering what the deal was with all that bass. It’s refreshing but in my experience somewhat unusual.

Yes it sounds amazing so good in fact I never ended up gutting it from console

Yeah I don’t think I’ll gut it either. Don’t really need to since it has then external speaker connections and all, just gotta make an opening in the back to access the RCA inputs and I’m set

Eventually the power supply caps will short out and that will be the end of it - you should consider replacing them. If it's been in continuous use, that's kept it going.
