Magnavox 8602 -10 se and poor man's set up

I bought the magnavox 8602 for $99 on Facebook marketplace.

I bought a broken outlaw rr2150 for $50 that's output wasn't working but The preamp works fine.

Got a Technics m6 cassette player for $25.

And a pair of Klipsch tangent theatre speakers in the garbage. 2 mids and a dome tweeter. Cosmetic damage to the cabinet but the speakers are nice.

Got $175 into everything. I think it sounds amazing for the price.

And **** vinyl because I'm not going to pay $25 for a Billy Joel repress record. Seriously the vinyl insanity is outrageous. Just kidding. I wouldn't pay 25 cents for a Billy Joel record.

Us poor folks use our cell phones and plug in an aux. Music for free. Yeah, give me 10k and my vinyl collection will be better than yours.

Any suggestions for better quality listening from a cell phone? Any nuances or inexpensive dacs or ways to improve it?

THIS article might help ... not sure how expensive/inexpensive these are - never tried cell phone/stereo combo ... nice score on the outlaw-as-preamp ..

I see you don't post often so I thought I'd try and point you in the right direction.

This is the tube forum, which is primarily dedicated to tube amps, tubes, how to fix, restore, modify etc

While you mention your tube amp in the title and how you much you paid for it in your initial post it seems you were more intent on letting folks know how much you paid for your overall audio equipment and your disdain for vinyl which then led to asking a question about audio cell phone quality and dacs.

There is a dedicate subforum here at AK with regards to DAC's that would serve you better in getting answers to your phone/dac question.

I use plenty of downloaded mp3's from utube and they sound good enough. cd's from the second hand and vinyl from the queen's collection. whatever floats your boat. also use one of those 30 buck chi-fi preamps for more gain. it all counts as long as it gets one's hips rocking. did you update the large can capacitor with new capacitors by wiring them underneath? new resistors? it'll make a difference.

free in the sense that its not an additional bill. Most people are already paying for some sort of internet access. If you have wifi internet at home, you don't need to pay for a phone with data plan in addition to that since the phone can just run off the wifi. If you're already paying for the phone with data, you aren't buying physical media.

or if you want my smartass answer, your neighbor that can't be bothered to put a password on their wifi.

I remember WAR driving. A simple circuit in a Pringles can and you had an antenna. Then drive around, or point it towards homes in the neighborhood looking for wifi signals. In town you would see targets or "WAR" painted on the sides of buildings, etc. There were a lot of no passworded wireless routers back then. Or they just had "password" as the password. There was plenty of free wifi in the early 2000's. :D
 
I kind of remember the Pringles antenna, though not the particulars. I seem to remember it was really easy to make though. Maybe a piece of coat hanger rod of some length, and an easy hand-wound balun to connect it to the coax?
 
And about $15 Worth of parts from Radio Shack. It helped to pinpoint the routers location so you could find the best place to park. I wasn't really into it, but I knew a few who were. They used laptops to connect to the free wifi. Now tou can just link up your lapoy or computer to your cell phone for internet.
