Magnavox AMP175 schematic needed, I'm not "Magnavoxfriends-worthy"!

Hi all,
I don't wish to start a huge rant, but I tried to join the Magnavoxfriends yahoo group because I'm trying to find the schematic for a Magnavox 175 tube amp, and I was denied membership!:no::thumbsdn:

From their homepage:
"I'm hoping this will become a meeting place for all fans of Magnavox, along with a place to post and trade info. Post your questions, files and pics here. Eventually they will go into a much larger freestanding site that will serve as an information source for Magnavox collectors and restorers worldwide."

From this statement, it would appear as though they share the same philosophy as the larger DIY community, namely, helpfulness and a willingness to share information... Since they gave no explanation, does anyone have any insights into why I was turned down? All I can figure is that they've mistaken me for someone else who was banned and is trying to rejoin. I can assure you this isn't the case. And, while life will certainly go on, it just kinda rankles me that they would be unwilling to share information on a fifty-year-old piece of tube equipment when they claim to be "a place to post and trade info".

So, to Magnavoxfriend moderator Brock, I say, "Really uncool, dude. :nono: You can just keep your stupid friends group!" :tears::tears::tears:

To everyone else, I say, " I have a Maggie AMP185 that I want to convert over to a 175 circuit. The 185 schematic is in the documents section here on AK. While I think I can figure it out, it would be easier to make sure I've done everything right if I had the 175 schematic. Does anyone have a 175 schematic they would be willing to share, thus restoring my faith in the spirit of the DIY community?" :D

Thanks to everyone in advance, I know from spending time on this site that AK is full of people that go out of their way to help others.

James, it could be that you were denied access because your email address "looks" like a spam addy.

Many forums "disallow the use of freemail, such as gmail, hotmail, yahoo, or certain other types of email accounts, for registration."

Hmm, I hadn't thought of that. I have run into that problem before, and it always frustrates me because I pay ten bucks (I think) a year to have a yahoo mail account that doesn't get deleted for non-use (I am not so much of a computer person, and I don't use email for regular communications, so believe it or not I can go months without checking my email), so even if my account is at yahoo dot com or ymail dot com, it IS my email account for better or worse. I have encountered various levels of difficulty over the years convincing people of this.. In any case it seems as a member of the Yahoo community I wouldn't be denied membership to a Yahoo group on such a technicality without at least an attempt to verify that I am a real person, but it's certainly possible I guess. Thanks for responding!

Incidentally, my wife is HIGHLY AMUSED by the whole situation...

Yeah, I rather doubt that the Magnavoxfriends group is a pack of elitist snobs. After all, they're refurbishing console amps... not exactly hi-buck HiFi.

Drop me a PM with your email address, and I'll get send you a copy of the schematic.

EDIT: There are a bunch of AMP175 variants - AMP175AA, AMP175BB thru AMP175FF, and also AMP17500, AMP17511 thru AMP17566 and AMP17567. Let me know which one you're interested in.

:thmbsp:

I've got the files you seek. How do you want me to send them to you? They're 5.75 mB total. Please send me an email or PM.

EDIT: Or just get them from Nate, who was a little quicker than I. :)

You would think that.

Some pretty arbitary and erratic behavior there, though, sometimes, IME. They ran me off. That's all I'll say about that, but it's true... if you happen to rub some of the people there the wrong way... the point is, this wouldn't be the first time this (or something similar) had happened.

Fortunately, I know most of the Maggie amps by memory by now... :D

Regards,
Gordon.

Gentlemen, this is why Audiokarma is so cool, people are more than willing to help others out!

It's also good to know that these things can happen to others as well.

Nate and Ty, thanks so much!! I will bother Nate first. Nate, I will send you a pm with my email address. I guess I don't know which 175 schematic I need. My 185 is a 185-11, from a phonograph only (no tuner), model 1SP209F if that helps, and it seems to date from 1959. The sticker by the turntable still refers to "Magnificent Magnavox", so maybe it is an earlier one? The tubes are interesting (at least to me), the 6v6's are smoked glass RCA's and the 12ax7's are Sonotone cleartops (all labeled Magnavox). All picked up for fifteen bucks at a local thrift.

So I guess just your basic 175 schematic might be best? Maybe any of them would be close enough to make a go of it? I really don't know. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks again to all!

hey i need the same schems! somebody send me a copy pretty pretty please! i just got an amp 175-67 in today. you can email them to dcat4955ATgmail.com

If they are rejecting people because the have free email accounts, then they really need to rethink their strategy. Gmail is used by so many people these days... it is quite foolish to block people with Gmail accounts. How can you be smart enough to repair these vintage amplifiers, but be too stupid to run a simple message board properly lol?

hmm, were you actively denied membership or was it that the join request just never got handled? If it's the latter you are not alone. Seems to be a history of complaints about join request going into a black hole. I think they usually eventually get done though.

I'm afraid I was actively denied. It's a moot point now however, because Redboy sent me the schematic I needed. Thanks again Redboy!! Generosity like this is precisely what makes Audiokarma such a great resource for everyone. :tresbon:

I quit that board about 3-4 months ago because most of the "ELITIST TUBE GUYS" couldn't or wouldn't acknowledge that S.S. was even an electronics form and had it's uses or that Magnavox would stoop so low as to make something so "INFERIOR". Someone would put up a question about something SS and they would descend on the guy like Vultures on a dead Coyote. I gave up and stayed here! I told the Board moderator what I thought about his administration of his so called "GROUP". No answer.

Hell, I get better answers on the TUBE FORUM here about S.S. Magnavox's than anywhere else....(except maybe the S.S. Forum in some cases).

I'm a member of Magnavox friends and I used my gmail for registration. I have seen some nasty responses from members there to requests for information. Did you request the schematic when you applied for membership? Depending on how the powers that be feel, they might turn you down for that reason.

"I have seen some nasty responses from members there to requests for information." Sure, because 50 year old schematics for cheap console amps are the equivalent of the secret location of buried treasure or the cure for cancer... All of this information, especially the Heathkit stuff that BAMA had to take down, needs to be, and should be, utterly free.
