Magnavox Astro Sonic Buzz

Hi All,

Very new to this world of record players / cabinets and especially have a more narrow frame of knowledge when it comes to something older like this. I picked this up cheap and everything seems to be working fine expect that there is a low buzz / static when the unit it turned on. As you can see from the video this happens no matter if the volume is all the up or all the way down and regardless of the input.

I’ve heard some talk about filtering capacitors, but I have almost zero knowledge on that as well. I’m very good with technical stuff and I’ve soldered before I just have no clue what would need to be done in order to “recap” this if needed. Any information or documentation would be helpful. Thanks guys!

Q? does this hum buzz go away? Sounds like a ground in the audio path if it stays humming.
Summer time is bit slow around here so answers may take some time.

I'm certainly no expert on these but there are many astro sonic posts but much depends on the model and serial no.

Hey there! The buzzing does not go away ever, no.
This post did inspire me to take the back off and have a peak at the wiring again.
In the picture you see there is a “C | 1 | 2” presumably for a center, speaker 1, 2
There are two black wires that are supposed to connect to the “C” and if I disconnect those wires the buzzing almost entirely stops.

I hope they gives some more Insight to the problem! I’ll check out those links in more depth, thanks again!
 
That's the crossover. If you disconnected the black wire, that is the common ground wire to both speakers so yeah, it would go silent.

Most of the time a hum that is volume independent is bad filter capacitors in the power supply. If you want to do it yourself, its easy.

C | 1 | 2, C stands for "Common".
1 - right (or left +)
2 - left (or right +)

Ok this is making more sense. These should be on the back of the amplifier (power supply, right?). They’re fairly large if I remove, maybe about 4-5 inches long at least right?

How would I go about replacing these? Are they like normal capacitors where you have to solder them off and on. Or do these just pop off then back on?
 
Usually soldered on pcb side unless there are screws on top. Mind positive and negative mounting polarity. Post the values on cans uf (mfd) and voltage. pic would help

Those can capacitors will have either a letter or symbol designation on them telling you which section of the can is which sized capacitors. Then you look for the corresponding labeled terminal lug underneath. The part soldered to the chassis is ground, of course, and be careful as some cans do not have a universal ground, but one for each capacitor section. The replacement of these can be done by an electronics layman, but you really need to seek guidance to ensure you do it correctly. It's the hardest capacitor replacement you'll find in electronics work due to limited space and fitting all of the new ones in place. I suggest you watch this video:

 
All cans have a single ground. It's called the can itself.

If you are going to replace the caps yourself, mind the polarity on the one with the paper cover. It cannot be grounded to the chassis.
 
FYI, one of those can capacitors looks to be 1500MFD (µF) @ 50 VDC. The other one looks to be 1500 and 500 in one can

Individual cans will probably be more expensive and the individual one's would be smaller and would fit no problem as there are only 3.
