Magnavox SP9003- The world most boring speakers?

I picked up a pair of what I believe to be Magnavox speakers today. I was thinking "$10 bucks for the pair? How can I go wrong?"

Well, now I know.

It's not that the component speakers are blown, or distorted. I can't quite explain, but there is zero richness of sound. Even the cheap Parallax bookshelf speakers I have sound better.

The sound is such a snooze fest that I'm actually intrigued. I want to crack them open (They are sealed; the grills are even glued on) and see what makes them so less than ordinary.

if anyone has any suggestions, or has any reason why I shouldn't bust into them, please let me know.

Bad caps? That'll take some life out of them. Or maybe they are just no good.

Surgery complete. The "Crossover" circuitry is a 2.7 uF capacitor for the 2" tweeter, and nothing for the 6".

I'm not sure if changing the one cap is worth it. It has at least been a learning experience.

The surgery was exploratory. I haven't actually changed the capacitor.

As for the drivers, the have no brand mark. The the speaker boxes are Magnavox, according to their serial number, so I suspect the drivers are as well.
