Magnavox TT in a mono Webcor console?

AK'er's-

I have an old mono Webcor console that I'm thinking of getting serviced. The only thing is (besides a blown power transformer) is that someone removed the original TT. I've seen some parted out TT's on ePay and wondered if they can be safely wired to work with the Webcor. I forget the Webcor model number, have it around somewhere. It's mono though. Probably around 1959/60 or so. Gorgeous cabinet that would really dress up our living room. Thanks for listening.

I don't see why you couldn't fit a Magnavox Collaro changer in there. Probably both are ceramic carts, so likely you wouldn't need to do anything special with it. I would go for a stereo Magnavox changer though, just so you can safely play stereo records on it. Simply tie the L and R outputs together and it should play OK.

Depending where you may be located, I have a small Emerson portable with a Webcor changer in it that I'd be happy to give you, but its not worth shipping. It needs an idler wheel, but its been serviced and has an NOS Astatic cartridge in it. With the flat spot in the idler wheel it makes horrific chugging noises as the flat spot bangs by but with a fresh idler it would work OK.

Attaching some pix for those who might be interested. I know that I always like viewing old gear... It's likely not for this forum, but the big transformer? on the right started smoking a bit a few years ago. Is this the power transformer, and how to I obtain a replacement or get it rebuilt? I had unplugged it and here it sits, waiting...4 AKTLC

More than likely if the power transformer is cooking, its because the capacitors in the power supply are done for and it needs a rebuild. Hope thats all the damage there is. If not, you could be looking at a new rectifier tube and possibly a transformer as well if the windings have shorted. Edcor and Hammond make transformers, Hayboer can re-wind them, but none of those options is extremely cheap and if you're replacing it with a non-original you have to figure out a suitable replacement and how to install it. It actually doesn't look original to me anyway. Notice the large hole underneath it where it doesn't quite seem to sit. I'm guessing an original transformer may have mounted in that large hole instead of on top of the chassis.

Yes, the Magnavox/Collaro Micromatic changer is a good choice for this application. Many older console owners wound up replacing changers due to wear or damage or the need to play LP or Stereo records.
