Hello-

I searched this forum for valuation info on Magnepan MG II speakers and was unable to find anything specific.

There is a party that is selling a pair of "near mint" Maggies not far from home for $300. He further states: "Grills mint, wood also mint. Functionally perfect also, refreshed by Magnepan a few years back by the original owner". I'm not sure what "refreshed" means, but will find out.

I've never owned a pair, but I've heard wonderful things about these giants, but $300 seems a little steep to me.

I'd very much appreciate your thoughts on this... thanks in advance!!

The MG-II is from around 1977 or so. Thats a pretty old model.
Older Magneplanars are basically aluminum wire glued to a mylar sheet. Over time the aluminum can corrode and separate, or the wire can delaminate from the mylar which can cause buzzing. The Magnepan Factory (or owners sometimes) do repairs by regluing the wire back to the mylar, or replacing the wire with fresh wire and gluing that down.

Maggies can be more complex than that, depending on the model, but that's the basic idea.
Some models have multiple panels, some have separate bass and treble panels.

Magnepan refers to the name of the manufacturer, Magnepan, Incorporated.
Magneplanar refers to the speakers made by Magnepan. MGIIs were great speakers back in the day
and are well worth picking up if you have the power to drive them, space to place them well away from walls,
and are willing to tinker with placement. What they do best is imaging and soundstage.
Positioning can make or break how good the MGIIs can sound.

As far as power, I'm currently using a Sansui AU-717 (85 wpc) to power my current system (pair of RTR 280DR's and KLH Model Six's) and it's more than enough.

I also have an Adcom GFA 545 II amp (100 wpc) at the ready if needed.

Do I need more power than this?

All that said - maneplanars can be some of the most amazing speakers to enjoy music with. I had a pair of MG-IIBs a few years back and although my pair suffered on contemporary music (not quite enough bottom, not much high-highs) on some music, like Sinatra singing One for the Road - sheesh - the presence was flat astounding ... I added a Volkswoofer to help fill in the low end ... but sold those mags a while back.

Understand that sound comes from the front and from the back of the panel - my wife said it was like swimming in the music.

I have heard the new models at a local audio shop and envy them - if you have the right space to play them in ... when they are right they will amaze!
