. n8dogg knows what’s up. Depending on vintage, they may need some sort of repair, but you’ll find out when you audition them if there’s trouble. Make certain you audition them.
They’re also pretty big and look a lot like room dividers, but they can sound pretty good. The caveat there is that imo, pretty much all of them need a subwoofer in the system if you want lows of any kind. Ymmv, etc., etc.
i want to do the work myself… seems like something i can tackle at this stage of the game.

yea sorry - was at work … gets a little obnoxious
maybe do some crossover upgrades / mods…i just want to get inside there and see whats going on… i dont know if there are any wire options that may improve the performance or will simply replacing help or not…

The wires are glued to the Mylar film, and the glue degrades, then the wires detach from the film. The repair for this involves stripping/cleaning the wires and the film and re-glueing them back down. Separately, the Mylar itself may have rips in it. It can be repaired with tape. Although not as common, occasionally the wires themselves are broken. This can be repaired several ways. But “upgrading” the wires probably won’t buy you much. Crossover mods will potentially be a good upgrade, I’ll let others chime in on that.

well it all seemed to good to be true…i was given the story that they were owned by an elderly couple - a retired engineer… never moved… in excellent condition … well it was all true. they are is as good of condition as i could have imagines. i listened to them via a marants 2230 (?) and no rattles and they sounded pretty da%* good… i guess there still are some good and honest folk on CL.

i like it all… ive had all types of speakers and they all have unique attributes. carver Al -3’s were probably my favorite… thus the interest in the planar’s (or ribbons)
im curious to hear the difference for myself.

I have always preferred the style of early Magnepan's. There is something about the Oak trim that attracts me.

You can try if you want. However, you'll get little volume and if the amplifier is SS there is the possibility of releasing the "magic smoke". This is a problem that tube amps usually don't have. A low power tube amp may run out of power. However, they don't self-destruct.

I used to go the Lyric Hi Fi to hear them, with the right turntable and amp they sound like magic, I wish I had the room
for a pair of those. Good luck with your's I don't know what your playing them with but you might have to upgrade in some
places.

I ran mine with a Nakamichi TA-4 receiver, a well-regarded 100W stasis unit, and it sounded ok. Many people say you need more power than that to get the most out of them. However, I also ran them with a Harman Kardon PM640, a 35W integrated. I thought they actually sounded better with that little thing. It claims to have “high current capability”…maybe the current is more important than voltage for these.
